Tatar may be banking on a top-6 player on another team getting injured in camp/preseason and getting a guaranteed contract. But that would seem foolish, to me.

Well he apparently just changed his agent so I’m sure we will have a destination for him this week.

We'll see, Friedman says most likely the Pens are not the team he lands at.

Who would you rather have than Pickett? I don't give a rat's ass about what college a player went to, but there's no star-studded QB out there who could elevate this team to contender. If Pickett sucks, then playing him gets a better pick position. If he figures it out, then he becomes a legit QB option. Win/win.

If you accept the Steelers arent going to rebuild, then my pick was to sign Derek Carr. I think Carr will do a lot better somewhere that isnt Oakland/Las Vegas.

Also could have had someone useful instead of Pickett

In that case, what's Ryan Leaf up to? It wasn't him, it was his poopty team.

Nah, he's chasing a Cup. My sources say Flyers are his top choice.

I could almost type that without cringing.

We talking about a guy regularly ranked as a top 12 qb though…

I'd rather use a guy that's either going to sink or swim as opposed to a middle of the road QB. If Pickett sucks, then you get a higher pick. If he figure it out, you have a young QB to grow with. Signing a guy like Carr is just going to keep you in mediocrity.

I'm not sold on Pickett. Didn't like that pick. But I've seen way too many bad games from Derek Carr. Sometimes he's great. Other times he completely sucks. He'd keep the Steelers as a fringe playoff team, but he'd never get them to a championship.

Carr is a top 15 QB overall and can be a top 10 QB when healthy and when playing a system that fits his abilities.

Pickett is a bottom 5 QB in the league now, and I really dont rate his potential beyond 12-15 QB in the league at best.

So I wouldve happily taken Carr and kept that 1st round pick for something more useful.

Bingo. Take the lottery ticket over a known quantity. They'll stick with Pickett for a few years. If he stinks, you do a de facto rebuild with high picks where you hope to get a better QB higher in the draft.

But that's the problem, he isnt going to sink or swim, he's a below average QB whose potential at best is a Derek Carr type career.

And it wont result in the Steelers getting a top 5 pick to draft a real #1 QB. We last drafted in the top 5 in 1970 when we got Bradshaw. This organization has enough talent outside of Pickett to consistently finish with 6-10 wins.

If the plan was to give Pickett a chance and worst case we suck this year and get a top 5 pick, I'd be on board. But that isnt how Steelers management/ownership sees it.

I just don't see Carr, who's much older and much more expensive, making them into a legit contender. Probably first round fodder at best. If Pickett's ceiling is Carr, I'd rather see if that's the case as opposed to signing the much older, much more expensive current-day Carr.

Is Carr a better current-day QB than current-day Pickett? Yes, the majority of the time. Does replacing current-day Pickett with current-day Carr make them into a contender? I don't think so.
