Hains: Farewell Tony-O
Once upon a time, the Canadiens were so deep in goal that they lost a tremendous goalie for absolutely nothing and he went on to write a huge part of the Blackhawks’ history. Yesterday, the curtain fell on the great Tony Esposito’s life, and he’ll always be one of those players you can never forget. |

it was a treat. he made what i still consider to be the most incredible save i ever saw. he was flat on his back(he was scrambly at times) and orr was alone n the slot, ripped a shot and somehow tony turned over and caught the puck. orr probably still doesn't believe it to this day |

It wasn’t all about the numbers and awards though, Esposito was also one of the pioneers of his profession. He was one of the first goaltender to drop to his knees to make saves and is often credited with planting the seeds to what would become the butterfly style of goaltending.
I thought Patrick Roy had come up with the butterfly style, but it turns out it was a "hybrid" that he popularized, so all the credit goes to Tony |

it was tony and he had a ton of critics because of it. it was tony who won the big games in the summit series including the crucial game 7 which allowed paul henderson's heroics in game 8. |

yeah I read that he was sometimes quite inventive with his gear, and for a short period of time he even had some sort of net between the pads to block the five hole |

well, to be fair he technically wasn't even cheating at the time, they came up with the goalie equipment rules only afterwards |

The NFL does that all the time but only against defenders. This guy is too good at "x" and he's dominating so let's just completely outlaw it and we'll have more points |

he only trusted one person to handle his gear. the place around here to get any real hockey gear was called Gunzo's. they handled all the equipment for the hawks. tony would only let the owner wok on his gear. had the same set of pads for most of his career.
grampy story time. my bro-in-law and his brother were equipment managers for the hawks. joe(the bro) actually had tony's pads because he was going to finally get new ones and at the last minute, tony decided not to change. he decided to just get them re-stuffed again.
its also how i ended up with keith magnuson's elbow pads and pit martin's shin guard. lol my sticks were pierre la plante or something like that. |

"l want to stay there (Vancouver) now, but I also want to play for a team that's winning and has the chance to go far into the playoffs every year," Pettersson added. "I feel like we've got a chance to do that next year. If we have that chance when my next deal expires... I don't know. I just wanna play where there's a chance of winning." |
