He doesn't have the balls to make a big move. At some point during this "rebuild" you actually have to start improving as a team. The losing is going to start negatively effecting some of the young guns. Just glad he isn't the Canucks GM which he could have eventually become.
It must be really hard for the oilers scouts to pick a top talent at 1st overall? Anyone could pick RNH and Hall at 1st overall, I don't know why you are saying the Oilers have good scouts. Besides, Hall or Seguin? Don't think Hall is better than Seguin now, or in the future. All-star on a cup winning team, while Hall is playing average on a last place team for the 2nd year in a row.

I don't think that Tambo has been bad as a Gm just overly cautious and that goes for the coaching as well.
I would have liked to have seen Tambo address the blueline at the start of the season. Even something as easy as snagging Colin White off waivers would have been a solid start. He's better than Peckham.

Yup because the scouts work finishes after the first round right? Hall/Seguin would have their fates reversed if the Oil had gone with Seguin. He would not be scoring in Edm like he is in Bos.

They managed to pick Jordan Eberle at #22 who's much better than anyone the current Leafs staff have picked in the top 10, so.....

Imagine how good Seguin would of been with the leafs! All-star as a rookie i'm sure.

It would have to be a more significant move then that. Have you see Colin White play? Would be a small upgrade over Peckham at best. It's a tough position for the Oilers to be in though because the asking price for a quality d-man is apparently very high so Tambo would have had to part with a promising young prospect(likely a forward) and/or a draft pick. I also don't see Dubnyk as a number goalie for a playoff team, maybe in a tandem situation with someone better than Khabibulin.

Clouts has admitted in the past it's pretty easy to select with the 1st overall pick. What he's eluding to when he says great scouting is that after the top 20 picks in the draft it's more or less a crap shoot! it's the guys a team picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds that really establish a teams depth! and the oil have drafted fantastic in the last 2-3 years in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Marincin and Gernat were both 2nd rounders that "will" be staples on defense for the oil. hamilton- 2nd, david musil 2nd rd, tyler pitlick, etc.
hartekainan in the 5th i beleive. these are good players with a very very good shot of long careers in the NHL

One could even argue that the scouting is sub par at that. Drafting the top ranked player first over all every year should be automatic, hell even I could do that. But are you actually drafting the best player for the teams specific needs? How many years in a row can the same team pick first over all and still remain the worst team in the league?
It's going to be great when all these first picks have to be re-signed.

I think you counterpointed your own point. Like you said, Seguin is scoring on a Stanley Cup winning team, and Hall is playing average on a last place team. Which is crap as well, Hall has been playing far from average, don't confuse him for Kadri. The Bruins were already a top tier team when Brian Burke (who is he the GM of again) traded what turned into a 2nd overall pick to a contender. Seguin is far from the reason of why the Bruins won the cup.
Like I've said before "Brian Burke; building Bruins championship teams since 2009."

Scouting is tough, I mean which team would take Alexandre Daigle over Chris Pronger.
