So.....how bout them scoreboards and standings...

Zibanejad doubling up Brassard in points. Phaneuf his usual train wreck self. Maybe we should wait about another 10 weeks to talk about this...eh Spatso?

The Sens have some easy games coming up so things are looking good. Montreal, Boston, and the Rangers in their next four games. Those are bottom feeders right?

Seriously though 8 of their next 12 games look pretty intense.

Montreal, Boston, Rangers, Pittsburgh, San Jose x2, Los Angeles, Anaheim.

And they don't have 5024763 home games in a row like they did to start the season.

I'm starting to get worried. Where are the Sens fans? Should.we send a search party?

Hopefully Laine injects some Viagra into him and we see him back tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah, hope so. I was just interested in their view on the Sens' -6 goal differential compared to the Leafs' -3.

I know we like to rip Dion and make fun of him, but seriously he is on pace for 18 whole points and a respectable -36.

And all of this for only 7 mil cap hit a year.

So I think it's time to really fess up to what Dion actually is

I actually don't mind Phaneuf. He's a decent top 4 guy. Way overpaid though and on the wrong side of the prime of his career.

no, he's decent space filler. prone to mental errors and probably at the worst of his game right now he had been relegated down a few lines with the leafs, wasn't succeeding even with a reduced role and they dumped him.

he's not gonna cause all iinds of problems long term but he won't solve any either. and the sens need solutions.

I may be in the minority in thinking the Leafs would have a better on-ice product with Phaneuf on the team this year.

That being said, part of the rebuild was a culture shift, and that involved getting rid of the old guard. With that in mind I think we all knew that it would be hard to move Phaneuf'a cap without taking back another albatross, unless he was moved to a budget team that had no real intention of ever spending to the cap or competing for the cup, that just had to make moves to placate their fanbase, even if those moves were terrible deals.

And thats exactly what happened. And on the plus side it bought us long-term cap relief to improve the team as our prospects develop... and Ottawa saved some cash. It's rare that both teams in a trade accomplish their objectives.

Sounds like you've been reading my posts on this trade, from a number of months ago, and have come around to the same conclusions that I did, months ago.

Don't worry, I will not file plagiarism charges.

I don't think I ever argued that Melnyk had any other goal than to save as much money as possible.

Yeah, a 6.5 million cap hit is terrible for him. He can no longer provide offense and can't skate. And he'll keep regressing.
I know the Sens care much more about actual $ than cap hit, but the Leafs could not have a guy like that making 6.5 million per with him regressing yearly.

This is an important point. I have always thought the Toronto media had way too much influence in the Leaf decision making. The media creates a theme, they pump the theme and everyone comes to believe in the theme because nobody wants to break the story line.

I believe the Austin Matthews story is a prime example of a runaway theme. Matthews was not even close to being the best player in the draft after Christmas. Both Finns were clearly better and had it not been for the media pumping his story as the Leafs first overall selection he would have dropped to third or fourth. Simply, everyone had too much invested into the storyline too pull back on the story everyone (including fans) wanted to see.

Anyway it will be apparent once the season starts that Matthews (a good player) does not punch in the same class as the Finns. Leaf fans will likely be discouraged. But, I don't think anyone will figure it out. They will wonder why everyone missed on Laine and they will blame Leaf management. They will miss on the pervasive influence the media has on Leaf management decisions.

And, so, when White and Brown are the first and second line centres at the WJC this year and Chabot is Team Canada's #1 D you will remain silent. When Matthews struggles you will remain silent. When the Leafs languish in last place, well out of the playoffs by December you will remain silent.

Your still trying to pretend that Karlsson is not a prodigy, a truly gifted player.

I understand that your attacks on Edmonton players in the past and now Ottawa players in all about deflecting attention from the overall failure of the Leafs. Well, get ready, you are headed to another year of futility.

But they're moving the leafs away from a top drafting position......... this is bad.

Also, they could end up just short of a WC spot, and that is just terrible.

- D0PPELGANGER

The leafs are now in a spot where they can start moving up. you only need sone many top prospects before it's time to start moving up the standings. I wouldn't mind another great pick. a good dman maybe. but we have so many top young players already.

slightly different than the sens. they have zero top young players. one of the oldest teams in the league. and still a middling team. probably won't make the playoffs.

Not for a team that has taken Matthews, Marner and Nylander with the last 3 picks...it applies to the Sens though

What are your thoughts on a budget team paying $1.4M for an AHL goalie this year and next?

Are you nuts? He's a really good NHL goalie but Ottawa's management is sooooo good that they have 2 better NHL goalies that they had to send down their 1.4M NHL goalie down to the AHL.
