Nice writeup Jan. With this trade, the meaning of it will be determined by Drury's next move and what he does with the cap space. Will he overspend on mediocrity or pull off trades to fill the gaps and keep some of the cap space for this time next year?

Mollie Walker: Rangers and Zac Jones have been discussing a possible extension; Drury has made an offer to Jones’ camp. #NYR

Arthur Staple on the Rangers:

1) Drury *might* have already worked it out with Zibanejad that moving on would be best; The Leafs might have interest.

2) Dumping Soucy is a must.

3) Cuylle likely gets 3.5M.

4) Rangers want to be aggressors in the offersheet market.

1. Really? Seriously...really?

2. Not really. He plays better in a zone D system. He will be better.

3. Fingers crossed on that.

4. Can't do that right now. The only way to do so is to get a 2nd round pick from someone. I have been preaching the Key Miller to Utah for McBain and a 2nd next year and may an additional 2nd in 27 if we include Berard. Without a 2nd rounder, the most you can offer is up to 7.03M (or some odd number like that) for five years. This sends a 1st and a 3rd to the other team. If this is for JJP (Buffalo), then the Sabers will easily match that.

And you cannot offer sheet a deal over 5 years. If you do more than five, the last two years see the cap hit as a penalty for 1.5x the AAV. Meaning if you offer sheet a 7M x 7 years, the cap hit for the last two is 10.5M.

Just spitballing here -

Cuylle & Soucy for

10 OA & Ian Moore -

More cap relief- you wouldn’t have to worry about the pen pick as much … there could be a pretty good D man at 10 - or a center man … and Moore is a solid D man who can play either side.

We get Cuylle & and send Soucy to AHL.

Just from what staple reporting.

Think zib isn’t going anywhere. I do believe miller and Soucy go to clear cap. Maybe they use some picks from miller on sheets

If Zib waives we will need a 1RW, where have we heard that before? Plus the Rangers will have to retain salary for the next 5 years.

You can only use your original pick for offer sheets, so getting picks in a trade does not help regarding offer sheets (unless you trade back for your original pick).

So what. It’s better than having him around for 5 years.

Where exactly is ZiB going to play on this revamped roster?

Which is why he isn't going anywhere unless the team being traded to takes on the full cap.

On another note, Mika needs to be 2C. This opens spots for Othmann and GP.

Come on. If we were in the playoffs right now and a dman went down, you’d be ok with Zac Jones as our 7th dman??? Launch him to the moon.

He needs to play. He gets better as he does. I am good with him on 3rd pairing.

Offered Rust up as a possibility when Sully took over. Excellent all around player.

It’s ok. We got rid of our 34 year old with 326 career goals and 48 playoff goals as a cap dump.

But now we’ll go pay top dollar for someone else’s 33 year old with 203 career goals and 21 playoff goals.

Then have to listen to people on here talk about how brilliant it was.

At his full $5.13M salary doesn’t make a ton of sense. Based on last season he could fill Kreider shoes, but would still be a little head scratching. If they retained, could be a different conversation.

The Pens thread is apparently done....

Rust played exclusively with Crosby last year so keep that in mind when you're looking at his stats. Most of us believe we'd have been a bottom 5 team without Sid.

Rust is still pretty good. Doesn't have the same burst. Gets dinged up because he still plays hard and blocks shots. I doubt he makes much of a difference for the Rangers. The Pens are trying to walk a fine line of a rebuild and keeping Sid happy. I think they'll probably keep him for that reason.

Why did they get rid of the pens thread?
