She seems like somebody who would be good working with kids, so maybe as a replacement for Lappy.
 - Tomahawk
lappy is the new Kjell....25 year lifer
all kidding aside not sure how a female head coach would go over. Not sure for lack of better word the respect factor wouldn't be there to me; hockey culture is weird. Would have t be an assistant first and be really good. |

Plus it is messed up. York is still a kid, not some 10 year vet, no way he is going to push back against a new coach in his first camp with him. Torts was being a bully here in every way because he had all the power.
Expecting York to stand up for himself is just stupid. It probably goes against everything he was ever taught from midget hockey all the way up to now.
Torts also needs to recognize that but for some reason he didn't, or doesn't care.
Its just stupid. - MBFlyerfan
So how many years will it take for York to be a man? |

It has nothing to do with being a man. It has everything to with with if you mouth off to your coach you are benched or thrown off the team.

Who said mouth off, Torts just wanted York to show some fire. Maybe back in the old days he would not dare to speak up but in current times players have more say.

just curious why you wouldn't expect York to stand up for himself? - hello it's me 2050
Everyone considered him the coward of the county
He'd never stood one single time to prove the county wrong
His mama named him Tommy, but folks just called him Yellow
But something always told me, they were reading Tommy wrong
He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison
I looked after Tommy, 'cause he was my brother's son
I still recall the final words my brother said to Tommy
"Son, my life is over, but yours has just begun"
"Promise me, son, not to do the things I've done
Walk away from trouble if you can
Now it won't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek
I hope you're old enough to understand
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man"
Eh, not everyone is built the same but Torts is a one trick pony.

Zamula - Feanor
Wait. A pretty big deal of York playing his off side was made by someone all season long. Are you okay with it now? |

He's a rookie, trying to make his way in the NHL. He's not there to confront the coach or get into war of words with the coach. He is there to play hockey. It is stupid to comment when is York going to become a man. I would ask when is Tortorella going to become a man?

Walker could drop to the 7 spot. Andrae is capable of beating out Zamula.
Beyond that, though, there very easily could be injuries during camp. Most years, there's at least one or two. - bmeltzer
Bill,
What are your personal thoughts on Helge Grans? I’m not expecting him to instantly take a roster spot but he’s the forgotten new guy that literally nobody is talking about. |

I stand by it. Torts decided very quickly that York was too laid back and casual and was in his face to try to get a rise out of him. Torts, who enjoys confrontation, tried a few times to pick a verbal fight with York, but found him impossible to goad. He came to accept that York does have an inner drive and then they were fine. - bmeltzer
I don’t have an issue with this. Anger can be a motivating tool but some just have an easy going nature that works for them. They rise above conflict, which is also good. |

Sorry, old song your question made me remember but the sentiment is the same.
Torts likes to goad/provoke people and some people refuse to be baited. That doesn't make them bad at what they do and it doesn't make a hockey player a bad hockey player. In fact, a smart person might see that Torts trying to manufacture conflict as more of a reflection on Torts limitations than his own.
As long as the player responds to coaching, actual coaching and not just provoking/goading for the hell of it, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the player.

Bill's explanation on York is why I will never be a Torts guy. York succeeded despite Torts, not because of him. Same goes for Frost. - MBFlyerfan
I’m not saying Torts’ methods are right or wrong but you do have to install a certain physical and mental toughness into certain players. Some can handle it, some can’t. Heck, I know movies are just movies but every football movie ever has a coach yelling at his players and grabbing them by the helmet. If this happens, why are hockey players any different? We’ve seen coaches be soft on our players and where has this gotten us? Bill is actually in the room at times and doesn’t seem to have an issue with Torts. The rest of us are just idiots with a cell phone and an option without experience. |

I do not disagree. Just was wondering why York cant stand up for himself was all as the other poster mentioned.
Torts is out of touch in many ways.

Seems reasonably successful:

(btw, I'm not putting her out there as the next Dave Hakstol or anything... just seemed from her interview that she had a grasp of developing modern hockey players) |

What about Ellis? Doesn't he have to be on the roster at the beg of the season, which means they would have to bury $6MM until day 2 of the season. - mr4tno

No, I think it sucks. But I doubt Staal is going to play the right side. It's a shame they couldn't have got Hamonic instead. |
|
|
|
I would say 90%
Only in that had Sanheim made it to FA his contract would have probably been in line with what he would get on the open market. Probably too many years, but the cap hit is accurate enough.
A team may see the contract, his age, the future cap going up, and may see it as a reasonable contract.
We shall see. - MBFlyerfan
Even if he plays at level we know he's capable of, that's still quite a bit of term. It'll be something to consider down the road. I just don’t see it for 2023-24.
