That's what cracks me up about the Flyers: cognizant of the fact they need elite talent but they do everything they can to deviate from that plan.
The second they hired Torts you knew the Flyers would be drafting outside the top 5.
Then they handcuff themselves with bad long term deals rendering any cap flexibility. |

They have to resign York as well. You are a better man than I trusting they wont waste that cap space on some pie in the sky signing. - MBFlyerfan
The key to me is the Flyers have got to move Hayes, if they can do it with only retainng some salary, they will be in a good spot. You're right however, when Fletcher has cap space burning a hole in his pocket bad things usually happen. |

so why, why can't the people in charge see this? Willful negligence is all that comes to mind |

I agree with you Bill, its not as bad as it seems. Going into next season the Flyers only have to resign potentially 2 players, Frost and Cates, and neither is going to get a huge contract. If the Flyers move Hayes they can free up about $4M so the Flyers could theoretically enter next season with about $10M in cap space which is healthy. The Flyers can fill some of their open roster spots with young players, because they have a decent farm system. Will the Flyers be a playoff team next season, probably not, but they will a developing team that can now accumulate cap space and that is actually a good place to be. - jd250
This post reminded me of certain people I have met in life, I always refer to them as the "Idea Guys". They always come out all spunky and have to tell everyone that they come up with the BEST ideas....like this one time this guy came up with the toilet that tells you when you are done using it. Everyone is "that's amazing, how does it work?".
The guys response is always the same...
"I don't know, that's for someone else to figure out. I just come up with the great ideas!"
All fluff, no execution.

For those asking
what's wrong with Ratcliffe I have been saying it over and over since the day he was drafted. He doesn't have NHL wheels. Never did and never will. Everytime I post that Bill disagrees but that's the fact. He cant even break Phantoms roster now. Totally wasted pick. |

It's only a matter of time until the rest of the league figures out that they play Flyers hockey. That when they get off the bus, the opposition is in for a fight. - MJL

Get over it my friend Hayes isn't going anywhere unless Flyers retain and attach assets. |

This is speculation, but I think they hoped that Torts would field a spirited, competitive team that would put up a good show and still finish bottom 5.

This is a huge worry for me. Fletch definitely has a history with this sort of thing.

example of a big guy doing well in juniors where he was man like. Now cant do much when other players are his size or close to it. Actually shocked he wasn't moved yet for futures to open up a contract slot.
Speaking of which, imagine being where the flyers are at and a max contracts. Incompetency at its finest.

I don't know. I can't quite see Scott and Fletcher hoping they'd finish the year poorly.
IMO I don't even think Torts gives a (frank) about wins and losses this season. It's HOW did they win or HOW/WHY did they lose? I genuinely feel Torts is treating the year like an 82 game preseason. He'll see what works and what doesn't going into 23-24.
Which again is another odd thing going with management. The guy you brought into to coach isn't quite on the same page as you (Scott/Fletcher ).
Again like yourself, I'm speculating as well. Just my 2 cents and what I see/feel. |

See the big man's shorty last game, flying up the ice like he did? Admit it, Risto right now is playing the best of all the Flyers defenseman and the important metrics back that up. I told you that would be the case, that Torts would coach him up, now just admit you were wrong and everything will be fine. - jd250
Show me the important metrics?

Nik Hjalmarsson was one of the biggest key players in their success. He took on most of the heavy lifting, playing against top lines and doing it very well. Shutting them down while still generating possession. This allowed Keith to play in top offensive situations and rack up the points and offense. - MJL
Seabrook was paired with Keith and took on the defensive responsibilities. But Hammer was a helluva 2nd pair guy. |

No, Hjamarlsson took the majority of defensive zone starts and played the most against top lines.

Ok no problem. But Seabs was paired with Keith. Maybe I misunderstood your original post about Hjalmarsson. I read it to mean he and Keith were a pair.

If that truly is the case, then the entire front office and ownership needs to be fired into the sun...that was NEVER going to be the result |
