Think I'm ok with this deal right now. Was time to shake things up. If they still can't put things together in Feb they can trade him somewhere else. |

Looks that way, according to Lou
Stephen Whyno
@SWhyno
Lou Lamoriello says #Canucks retained 25% of Bo Horvat's salary, which events out the cap with Anthony Beauvillier.
So his cap hit is $4.125M right now. If this whole thing blows up and doesn't work out by the end of Feb then I guess the Isles could concievably retain another 25%-50% and get back a good haul for him? I don't know, I'm so confused right now. - eichiefs9
That could be a helluva flip. The 'we have every intention of resigning him" comment gives me Vanek flashbacks. |

Yeah, but different GMs at work. Cannot compare Lou's competence to Snow's incompetence.

Lamoriello said no contract extension talks as of yet with Bo Horvat but is confident that one will get done. #Isles |

Not for nothing but Horvat called Barzal "Barzy" so they might be friendly already.
Or it's just his known nickname and means absolutely nothing.
They did play together at the World Championships.

Unfortunately I would imagine this process, like our supposed UFA pursuits will rest on the player's preference. This is Horvat's cashout contract. Cue taxes, and roster state. We'll see, but I have a feeling any extension will be yet another overpay |

Probably. Of course, as has already been noted, if Lou and Bo can't get it done, or the team is playing lousy even with Horvat, Lou has the option of trading him at the deadline. |

Why don’t we see how the deal works out?
Let’s see if Bo has some chemistry with his new teammates. Helps the PP and if he helps this team make the POs and maybe a serious run at the Cup. Then we can take the next step and start the contract process.
The guy hasn’t played one game and he’s leaving after the season? Makes sense? |

For a most likely higher draft pick. I’m just trying to figure out how we win this trade? Does anyone think we’re winning the cup with Horvat? If we sign him then we have a guy who scored more then 60 points once in his career (I get the shortened seasons)save for his contract year as our number one center signed at 27. Handcuffed to that at a high number(Lou has zero leverage now and his agent knows it). I don’t understand this trade.
Maybe he really plans on trading Nelson? |

Yeah he just traded for production and he’s going to trade our highest scorer currently in Nelson?

I wasn't suggesting we win the trade. Just that it's not a complete loss, if things don't look like they're gonna work out. I'm the guy who wanted the team to tank and go on a 2-year rebuild. But now I'm taking a wait-and-see approach............mostly because I don't have another option. |

How about letting him play a game ( just one )before we (frank)ing say who won the trade |

I dont think Nelson gets moved......maybe to wing on the second line, but I doubt they trade the guy who's been the most consistent islander for years. |

Yeah it is what it is. Whatever. I guess we’re hoping to just make the playoffs and sign Horvat? Sounds great. |

I think my concern here is the potential for failure is through the roof. Crazy thing is when we played Vancouver, Horvat had a couple of goals and I thought 'Wouldn't mind having him'
The reality we have all acknowledged this season is that the Isles are an aging slow team with very little in terms of young talent. When I remove Raty and Beau from the lineup, adding Horvat, we look "better" but still not good. Our franchise as a whole is extremely thin at wing. Now we're even more thin.
As for Horvat's likelihood of hanging around, my guess is that won't happen unless:
A. The Isles make a playoff run
B. We manage to sign him in the offseason
Both of those strike me as highly unlikely. Given our place in the standings and his opportunity to cash in elsewhere, I have serious doubts he'll sign anytime soon. Additionally, I worry such an extension will be based on standards he can't repeat. We'll see. |

I’m not saying they should. Not now obviously. The comment was in the “long term” sense due to trading for another center when we currently have four. I know everyone is saying Barzal to wing but who knows really. |

The good news is that Centers can usually move to wing. I personally haven't been overly thrilled with Barzal at center on the first line. |

I think that’s an easy assumption but it doesn’t always work. Look at Nelson for an example of that. I would assume if that’s the plan it has been discussed with Barzal. Who knows maybe it wasn’t and we’re trading Barzal for a first and a prospect. Surprise. |

He won’t sign soon and would be foolish too.
Let’s see how he meshes with his new team. If he comes here and they go on a tare then he maybe more inclined to sign here. If it’s a total flop for him and the team then Lou cuts his loses trades him for whatever he brings and the rebuild commences.
Let’s wait and see how the deal affects the performance of the team. The fan base has been screaming for a goal scorer. Well you got him.
He can play the wing or center.
Barzal’s wingers in Lee, Bailey and Casey have all played the C position in the D zone and taken draws while letting Barzal be Barzal.
For me I’m excited to see if Horvat can produce with Barzal. Hopefully they have some chemistry and become the one two punch we have all been looking for. |

Well they did play together at Worlds and I believe Horvat played LW for Barzal. |

The internet GM's must have known something. Even Lou finally understood this roster was not good enough and he did nothing for two years.
