Some posters believe that keeping Fletcher as President of hockey ops and naming Briere GM isn't changing anything. Well their wrong and I'll tell you why. After Thursday's pressers from both Fletcher and Torts, its clear they are not on the same page, not by a long shot; and Briere is caught in the middle. What will happen is Torts will win this internal battle and Chuck will be moved out of the organization, starting with moving him to President. The Flyers will give Fletcher the title and have him handle the business side but tell him he needs to stay out of the hockey operations. He will either accept the new role or move on from the Flyers within a year or so. Briere will work well with Torts and by that I mean he will do what Torts wants and the rebuild will occur. If Comcast doesn't want this, they will sell the team. Its clear after Thursday's presser, Torts through his gauntlet down and drew his line in the sand, and honestly given how the fans feel I don't see the Flyers brass crossing that line. If they do, they will see empty results and more importantly, an empty building.

What’s interesting is that I haven’t seen video or a transcript of Fletcher’s presser. On the other hand, Tort’s presser was up on YouTube and the Flyers media right away. This lack of GM visibility should not fly. Did you see it? Link?

It started with Tampa. Then there’s Colorado twice in eight days, Washington, Vegas, the Devils again, the Rangers, Toronto and Carolina with only a pesky Arizona and a Columbus team that has beaten the Flyers twice already mixed in as the “easier” opponents before the holidays.

It’s like Fletcher’s own, personal, 12 Days of Christmas.

We should all be rooting really hard for the Flyers to lose every single one of these games, so we can finally rid ourselves of Fletcher!!

I did not see the actually presser from Fletcher and I searched for it quite a bit. All I have is the quotes that have been posted. That should tell you something about what is going on in Flyers-land these days.

Been thinking the same thing for a while. Torts is everywhere, Fletcher is barely seen. That’s not just marketing the guy.

It has been delayed-viewing the last few times he met with the media but not by this long. We’ll see.

It’s like Torts is quoting from “My Cousin Vinny” in saying “Everything that guy just said (CF) is b*llsh*t. Thank you.” At this time, as a fan, all I want is honesty as to what the direction really is. At least Torts is being honest and not spraying perfume on a turd like Fletcher is.

Some of the things you read on Hockeybuzz. I find it humorous when it's posted that people are wrong and here is why is stated emphatically. Only to be followed by completely illogical thought. Dave Scott and Valerie Camillio and her staff of Comcast Spectacor handle the business side of the team. Apparently, Chuck Fletcher will keep the title of President of HOCKEY OPS but have nothing to do with hockey ops. LOL. As President of HOCKEY OPS, Fletcher will oversee all of hockey ops. Fletcher is a hockey guy. He is not a business guy. Taking the GM title away from him and giving it to Briere doesn't change anything. The reason is simply that unless the Flyers core principles of how they are going to approach team building changes. Naming Briere as GM is just rearranging the deck chairs. Unless there is a gutting of the entire department, including all of the senior advisors. Nothing is going to change.

IMHO, moving forward the only "senior advisor" in this organization with any voice is John Tortorella!

That was interesting….I actually wanted to see if Fletch could keep a straight face when talking about the playoffs or is he really that stupid?

Is that what he is doing? Or is he just trying to give cover for the teams poor performance under his direction? He talks and talks about being hard to play against and the process and structure of play. About locker room issues and the like. States ""You just get stuck in the mud if you continue to put band aids on and gimmicks to get people in the building, whatever it is."
I got news for him. Over playing players like McEwen, Deslauriers, Brown and Seeler is putting band aids on. He lacks patience with young players and favor vets with no upside. He's coaching for his legacy and not for the future of the team.

Fletcher is the biggest used car salesman BS'er in hockey. Tortorella is not far behind.

Sure seems to be a disconnect between Fletcher and Torts (and a disconnect between Fletcher and reality). Hard for me to see Fletcher still with the Flyers if they move him out as GM. What about Valerie Camillo? Comcast seems to see her as a rising star. What’s her relationship with Briere? With Chuck? Why do you need Chuck to oversee Flyers business operations if she’s already doing it? Or is the plan for her to take over for Scott? I think, and hope, a major shakeup is coming. I think Camilo is going to factor in in a big way.

A change is coming and it will come soon. Comcast is all over social media, they care about what fans and pundits are saying about the Flyers and its been a pretty consistent message for a few years now. They will shake things up, they have to. I would be shocked if they fired Torts so that is why I see him winning this battle of direction of the franchise. Fletcher will lose and take a title to save face, but as I mentioned will leave quietly when things settle down. I still believe the Flyers need an outsider as GM, someone with GM and player development experience but also someone that comes from a winning organization. I have posted who I think that person is. I just think Briere needs more time before he thrusted into the this role at this time. This organization is floundering, its not the right spot for a first time GM with very little experience.

The problem is that Tortorella's actions betray him. Are we to believe that overplaying players like McEwen, Brown, Sedlak and Seeler is how you build it the right way? He says it's going to take time but doesn't hesitate to limit ice time of a young player who might make some mistakes. In favor of a more experienced veteran player who has no future.
- MJL

We’re aligned in our frustrations, but him playing those dudes over kids is all about building the culture of accountability….not “building the team the right way”.

He plays those guys because when he says “Seeler, you’re expected to do XYZ”, and when they are in the film room he does his job, you don’t demote him for a kid who is “the future”. He’s doubling down on that, as I believe we all think it’s been an issue

then there is this...

I would say discuss, but it is way to easy to pick it apart and I think we have covered it all

Hayes-Cates-Konecny
Tippett-Sedlak-Willman
Laughton-Frost-Farabee
Deslauriers-Brown-MacEwen
van Riemsdyk-Laczynski-Atkinson (extras)

D

Provorov-Ristolainen
Sanheim-Braun
Seeler-DeAngelo
Zamula (extra)

- wcorvette

When Cam and JVR come back, which two forwards are moving out? I got to think it will be Willman and Frost. Then you have:

Hayes-Cates-Konecny
Tippett-Sedlak-Atkinson
JVR-Laughton-Farabee
Deslauriers-Brown-MacEwen
Frost-Laczynski-Willman (extras)

And also, what other players can he play?? Frost has not grabbed the reigns this year and he has been give every chance to do so. These are the players he has so he plays them. I don't see him doing anything bad here, except his choices for who plays in the 3 on 3 OT.

It's done under the veil of accountability. He's doing it because he thinks it's the best way to win. Part of the pain that he talks about is dealing with the mistakes that young players make. It's part of the process of developing players. You absolutely demote a player with no upside in favor of a young player with upside when you're in the Flyers position. Young player don't have the same experience level. You have to play them and let them play through the mistakes.

That’s all fine and good but that gets you nowhere. If the younger guys have more talent but make more mistakes then so be it. The guys doing their job isn’t moving the needle because they are fringe role players.
If a young guy keeps making the same mistake as a coach you need to find out why and coach that player.
Unless that players hockey IQ is nil you have to do your job as a coaching staff.
Maybe a younger guy was coached to do something different for 15 years or so and muscle memory keeps him doing the same thing.
If there are enough young guys who are doing making the same mistake maybe what you want them to do needs to be adjusted instead of forcing a square peg in a round hole.

Charlie O’Connor’s most recent piece in The Athletic talked about the dichotomy in messages between Fletch and Tortorella. The coach acknowledges the reality of the situation while the GM tapdances around the obvious.
