Greetings, Hockeybuzzooligans!

As a dog returns to its vomit, so too do Leafs fans for another season of misery hockey.

Welcome to the Official 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction Thread!

You know the drill. Use the template below (hit return, then delete {quote=Atomic Wedgie} at the top, and {/quote} at the bottom) and fill out your predictions for the year. There are no real rules - put down point totals, beeyotchy insults, general thoughts - I don't particularly care.

At puck-drop time on opening night one of our refs will lock the thread, so your predictions will haunt you like trading 2 1sts and a 2nd for a complementary winger with a hot dog addiction..

DO NOT MOCK OTHER GUYS' PREDICTIONS IN THIS THREAD!

Do that in the main Leafs threads. But simple rule - if you want to rip a guy a new one for a stupid prediction, you had better have made your own (stupid) predictions first. Otherwise, we will practice social distancing on your ass.

There are no prizes. I will not declare an official winner. Rather, the purpose of this exercise is for you to demonstrate your Leafy geniousness, and to allow others to witness your glory.

So without further ado...

You should value my predictions this year because:

The Leafs will finish:. 1st in Atlantic

The main reason for this is: TB and FLA got worse, Leafs are the best

The biggest surprise will be: Malgin

The biggest disappointment will be: Engvall

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Gaudette

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Gaudette- Likely doesn't get sent through waivers for opening night but simply is a fringe player

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Justin Holl-watch the game, read the stats

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Jarnkrok but it took 5 years too long

If I was GM, I would have: Upgraded the 2LW and traded Kerfoot

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: Malgin becomes valuable, spends time in the top 9 and scores 45+ points this season

You should value my predictions this year because:
My brain is broken but it still kinda works

The Leafs will finish:
3rd overall and 1st in their division

The main reason for this is:
This team is full of players with talent looking to prove they’re not done in their career or they haven’t peaked yet

The biggest surprise will be:
Marner succeeding on the D role more than expected

The biggest disappointment will be:
Liljegren will have an off year due to injuries

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?:
Holl is a very reasonably priced defence first back end guy. His season will be decent this year because I think Muzzin will remain healthy and those two will be a solid shutdown pairing.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is):
I think Sandin is good but not as much as everyone else does. He’ll drop the ball defensively a bit this year and disappoint some fans.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is):
Let’s give this one to Kerfoot. He’s really quite versatile.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was:
Not resigning Campbell at that length and cost.

If I was GM, I would have:
Leaned a little heavier on getting an 8 or 9th D man who shoots right handed.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs:
If those goalies play well and the team goes primarily unhurt they’re be monsters this year.

You should value my predictions this year because: I was basically spot on last year for regular season predictions.

The Leafs will finish: 1st in the Division, 2nd in the East

The main reason for this is: Continued improvement in the team and Florida got worse.

The biggest surprise will be: Robertson

The biggest disappointment will be: The fans standards if Holl is shoehorned into this roster for the entire year.

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Holl. Obvious answer is obvious.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Honestly don't think anyone fits this bill. Most players on this team are either good or Holl (excluding bubble players that shouldn't factor in). And no one who actually watches him play can think he's good.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Robertson. Still a kid and has an incredible shot.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Not sign Campbell long term to big $$$.

If I was GM, I would have: Traded for Chychrun the second the ask wasn't insane. And booted dead weigh out the door he second another team was stupid enough to take him.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: Regular season the roster won't overly matter but come playoffs, bad players can't be suiting up for them again.

You should value my predictions this year because:
Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong. But its always a fun ride

The Leafs will finish:
Top in the league. 3rd

The main reason for this is:
They have a good team, goaltending will be average to good.

The biggest surprise will be:
Samsonov...but Im hoping its also Robertson

The biggest disappointment will be:
Leafs dont change their goal song.

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?:
Holl. He can play in the NHL, but not in a top 4 role of a team with cup aspirations....or 2nd round aspirations, stay in the bottom 6. Question should be, why did Dubas give this guy a M-NTC?
I think Gaudette as well.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is):
Right now I dont really think anyone on the leafs "sucks"...if I have to choose, maybe Engvall? Even I dont mind him at all.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is):
Kerfoot for sure. So versatile and definitely needed on the team. Unless Jarny can replace him, which I believe is the plan.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was:
Letting Campbell walk.

If I was GM, I would have:
Not traded for Murray, or tried to lower his cap even more, get a third team involved or something. Which dubie may have tried.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs:
Their regular season means nothing (other than it will be fun to watch), their only goal it to get past the first round, which I believe they will. They see the 3rd round and dubie gets extended.

You should value my predictions this year because: I have a good feeling about the Leafs this year.

The Leafs will finish: 1st in Division

The main reason for this is: Their best players will be their best players when it counts, including the playoffs.

The biggest surprise will be: The goaltending.

The biggest disappointment will be: Malgin. No, not Malkin, Malgin.

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Wayne Simmonds

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Engvall. He's soft.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Matt Murray: He's a winner.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Additions to the bottom six forward group, and adding useful depth pieces in general.

If I was GM, I would have: Considered acquiring another defenceman through trade.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: The Leafs were on a mission this year.

I see none of you knows a god damn thing about hockey as usual. Again with a bunch of moronic leafs cup predictions.

If every one of you is going to predict the leafs as the bestest every year what is the point?

I’ll refrain from leaf predictions because what’s the point.

You should value my predictions this year because: I am usually right, seriously, look it up

The Leafs will finish: first in the atlantic

The main reason for this is: They will compete with Tampa (who doesn't really give it's all during the season) and Florida (who will take a small step back).

The biggest surprise will be: Nick Robertson starting the season in the top 6 posting good numbers in the first half of the season.

The biggest disappointment will be: Matt Murray getting injured again.

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Victor Mete. He's not even a temporary solution.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is):Michael Bunting. He's a decent finisher but put him with anyone else than two top 15 forwards in the NHL and his numbers would drop it faster than Snoop dogg's mic after a verse.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Justin Holl. Wayyy too much hate for a reliable third pairing guy on a decent enough contract.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Sign Giordano to a league minimum contract.... despite the 2 years, it's a great deal.

If I was GM, I would have: Stayed the hell away from Matt Murray.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: The Leafs will live and die with their goaltenders. If somehow Murray stays healthy and performs well or if Samsonov takes a big step forward in consistancy, they could be a very dangerous team in the playoffs. If it doesn't happen, I expect nothing less than another game 7 round 1 loss for the giggles.

Point projections? I don't give a crap but Matthews will score alot. There.

First pick overall lottery winner: Montreal Canadiens, hell yeah baby!

Most surprising team: Buffalo is gonna be much better now that the Eichel curse is gone.

Most disappointing team: Washington. With Backstrom's career over, I think they'll take a major step back this year. I also have no faith in Kuemper when not protected by Colorado's powerhouse.

Best player/$: Cale Makar

Worst player/$: Mike Hoffman. (frank) that guy.

Guy who should have retired instead of playing in 2022-23: He's not playing, but the fact Joe Thornton has not retired yet is just... awkward.

You should value my predictions this year because: Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while

The Leafs will finish: 1st in the East, 2nd overall

The main reason for this is: Great offensive depth and improved goaltending

The biggest surprise will be: Matt Murray

The biggest disappointment will be: Rasmus Sandin

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Holl

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Josh Anderson. A $5.5M big salami that likes to cheapshot better players whose ceiling is 32 points and -25

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Matt Murray. Played hurt on an awful team. He will reap the rewards of playing for a strong team.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Sign Samsonov

If I was GM, I would have: Shipped out Holl and found another RHD

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: Will be walking the Cap tightrope all season and might find a few cheats that Tampa did not expose.

Atomic Wedgie's Predictions:

You should value my predictions this year because: I was the one who told you guys that Komarov sucked. Like, way before you admitted that Komarov sucked.

Luckily, LouLams didn't listen to me.

The Leafs will finish: 1st in their division. Yeah, what the hell, I went there.

The main reason for this is: Dubas had a good offseason. It's a stronger team than last year - especially at the goalie position.

The biggest surprise will be: goaltending. It will be much better last year. Honestly, I couldn't even remember who our backup was last year - that's what we call a suppressed memory.

The biggest disappointment will be: Nick Robertson. And that's because Leafs Nation has ridiculous expectations of him.

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Tough one, because the lineup is so deep this year. I'm going to go with Malgin?

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Engvall. And it's not that he's a particularly bad player - just that he could be replaced and we wouldn't noticed. I think he gets traded when we need cap space.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Holl. Typical Leafs self-hatred: he's paid to be a bottom-pairing guy, yet we are mad that he doesn't get Norris Trophy consideration.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: replacing the goalies. I wish Campbell the best of success in Edmonton, but the guy wasn't mentally cut out to be Toronto's goalie. Murray > Campbell, and my puck bag placed in front of the net > Mrazek.

If I was GM, I would have: signed Phil Kessel. No, I'm serious. Dude is going to put up points this year - should have been with the Leafs. We could have placed him on the 3rd line, and he would have gone 30-30.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: this Leafs team is considerably improved from last year. Yeah, I mean it.

- - - - - - - - - - -

THE LEAFS

Forwards:

Auston Matthews - I predict he will be a little bit below his 2021-22 numbers. I sincerely don't care. Just get 'er done in the playoffs this year.

John Tavares - his numbers will be better than last year, as will his play. I think he was pretty banged up for long stretches last season.

Mitch Marner - will also have slightly better numbers than last year, and that's really saying something. Will get more PK time now that Mikheyev is gone, and will lead the league in SHG.

Willy Nylander - under-rated and underpaid. Praise Dubas. Look for him to go hot at times, and go into slumps because he is disinterested.

Alex Kerfoot - not sure why Leafs fans want to get rid of this guy. He's our Swiss army knife - every team needs one. I don't really care about his points - just have a strong season.

Pierre Engvall - nothing against this guy, but his $2.25M salary can be moved and he can be replaced with two forwards at $1M. I predict he's traded before Christmas - hell, maybe before Hallowe'en.

Calle Järnkrok - I have no idea who this guy actually is. No, seriously.

David Kämpf - Let's be honest - it doesn't really matter what a lot of these guys do. We'll win or lose with our top three lines, and our goaltending. 30 points for Kampf this year.

Nicolas Aubé-Kubel - I predict that this year I'll find out who he is. That's it.

Michael Bunting - I think we've seen the ceiling for Bunting - which isn't a criticism. He's the best bargain on the team. Same numbers as last year, and then he signs a big contract as a UFA next year with another team.

Wayne Simmonds - love this guy, but he is done. You can't be an energy player if you can't keep up with the play. If he's called back up to the Leafs, we are in trouble.

Kyle Clifford - could be replaced by anyone, and we wouldn't notice. Not a Leaf this year.

Joey Anderson - who?

Adam Gaudette - who?

Zach Aston-Reese - Go fourth-line guy!

Rodion Amirov - I hope he remains healthy, and gets a regular shift on the Marlies all year.

Alex Steeves - who?

Pontus Holmberg - who?

Ty Voit - who?

Nick Robertson - will be up and down all year - partly due to his non-waiver status, and partly due to the fact that he's not that good.

Semyon Der-Arguchintsev - who?

Denis Malgin - look for him to fade in the first few months. I don't think he is NHL material (prove me wrong, Denis!!!).

Defence

Morgan Rielly - this is going to be a big, big, big year for Morgan. Top 5 in scoring for D, Norris chatter by non-Leafs fans (but won't actually make the top 3).

Jake Muzzin - just hoping he can stay healthy, but I know he can't. In and out of lineup all year.

TJ Brodie - I look for him to have slightly better offensive numbers this year. Should be just below 40 points on the year.

Justin Holl - He'll be fine. You won't notice him many nights, which is perfect. Lay off of him.

Timothy Liljegren - him and Sandin are going to be 6-7 this year. I don't think they've fully made the jump yet - which is fine. Be patient, Leafs Nation.

Rasmus Sandin - see above.

Mark Giordano - he's going to become a fan favourite, with simple but effective play. Look for them to do load management on him this year - won't play every game.

Topi Niemelä - who?

Mac Hollowell - who?

Jordie Benn - will see some icetime as the season wears on, as Lilly and Sandin slide down the bench.

Victor Mete - don't care.

Goalies

Matt Murray - will be better than Campbell was last year. That's it - that's the prediction.

Ilya Samsonov - will be a good backup goalie, and Leafs Nation will call him poop for not being a #1 goalie.

Joseph Woll - don't care.

Erik Kallgren - if we see him in the NHL, it will be due to injuries.

You should value my predictions this year because: I keep it real and don't think my opinions are fact.

The Leafs will finish: 1st in their division

The main reason for this is: Goaltending is better than most complained about this summer

The biggest surprise will be: Nylander scores 40

The biggest disappointment will be: Holl playing top 6 minutes a lot of the year

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Actually I don't think we have any AHL player's on our starting roster

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Bunting is probably overrated but doesn't suck. Probably a great bottom 6 that gets under the opposition's skin, but looks like a top 6 fit playing with an MVP and a 2 time 1st team allstart as his linemates

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Nylander works harder on defense than people give him credit for. He needs to keep improving his defensive hockey IQ

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Sign both Lilly and Sandin to 1.4 million

If I was GM, I would have: Hired Dubas as an assistant

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: Sandin and Lilligren should be played a ton this season for their development.

You should value my predictions this year because: After being wrong for so many seasons, I'm due.

The Leafs will finish: 1st in the Atlantic, 1st in the East, 2nd overall

The main reason for this is: Maturity of the youth, more balance in the bottom-6, more stability on D.

The biggest surprise will be: Bunting with get a point/game; Nylander will score 40; Murray will be marginally above league average in s% . . .

The biggest disappointment will be: Ilya Samsonov; he has the skills, but he will be a below average goalie

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Malgin or Holl; Holl is an NHL defenseman. Malgin is a fringe forward at best, so I'll go Malgin if I have to pick someone - but I think he finds a bit role in the bottom-6 (unless he is lost on waivers).

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Alexander Kerfoot. He is a fast skater and a smart player and a decent passer. Somehow he's always among the league leaders for taking hits, and yet we all know he's soft. Lots of metrics say he doesn't suck, and yet . . . I can't help but hope he's the one we trade.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Engvall. I think I say the same thing about him all the time. He gets caught in the possession game too often. He overthinks. But I like his smarts, and they are getting better. He's a good checker and a smart player, and I hope he's not the one we're trading.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Giordano at $800k was a great move. Jarnkrok is the type of guy we need to compliment what a guy like Kampf brings as well. I like ZAR and Aube-Kubel as well, but those moves aren't as helpful, in my opinion

If I was GM, I would have: Found a way to retain more on Matt Murray (if not wholly avoiding Murray altogether)

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: This is the best Leafs team most of us will have ever seen. Enjoy it for what it is.

Here are 100% of the answers;

You should value my predictions this year because: I'm Wedgie and also, why not?

The Leafs will finish: 2nd in the Atlantic

The main reason for this is: Lack of 3rd line scoring

The biggest surprise will be: Aube-Kubel

The biggest disappointment will be: Tavares

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Holl

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Holl, how is he the best option to play with Muzzin. The reason is Holl still sucks

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): ZAR, I think he will get 20 points and his physical play will be important

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Trade Mrazek

If I was GM, I would have: traded for a RHD or Chychrun

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: This team will compete for the Cup and get past the 1st rd

You should value my predictions this year because: I wanted to trade Marner after the Habs series debacle!

The Leafs will finish: I feel Cup this year. Period.

The main reason for this is: I don't care if they win any more. When I don't care things work out best.

The biggest surprise will be: Matt Murray

The biggest disappointment will be: Keefe, some of his coaching decisions will almost cost the team in key moments.

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Holl...aka Marincin 2.0

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Holl

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Kerfoot he fills every tiny crack in the roster and does it well.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Murray or if we are talking skaters Jarnkrok

If I was GM, I would have: tighten up the D with a little more toughness

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs: Murray, Cup

You should value my predictions this year because:

I was among, if not the, most accurate last year.

https://www.hockeybuzz.co...read.php?thread_id=175056

The Leafs will finish:

2nd in the division, 5th overall, 107 points.

The main reason for this is:

Lots of goals for but lots of goals against, Tampa Bay is either equal or better at every position.

The biggest surprise will be:

Jarnkrok. Dependable defensive player, nothing flashy but works hard.

The biggest disappointment will be:

The goaltending. Two giant question marks both in quality and in health. This was a giant gamble with other more reasonable solutions available. The "disappointment" will come from not being good enough to carry the team to a Cup by standing on their heads or getting injured at the worst possible time.

I have to rant on this one because it's the most Leafy, Dub-ass thing imaginable.

The pipe dream of the home town boy coming home, after years of terrible seasons and injuries to recapture the glory of years gone by is just so typical of this franchise. It's a great front page story in October but a long shot in the reality of May.

If somebody had suggested that the Leafs acquire this guy July 10th at only 25% salary retained, they would have been berated out of the forum. Didn't they give up on Andersen / Campbell because they got hurt too often and cost too much? Well, this guy is one concussion away from being sent to the quiet quarters on Robidas Island. Not to mention the multitude of other injuries he's sustained year over year.. Having played for the Soo Greyhounds gets you a free ticket on this team and it's idiotic.

Hire the best possible people, not just the people you use to know. End of story.

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?:

Malgin. Seriously, how the (frank) does he justify bringing this guy back? He's tiny, he's weak, doesn't play in all three zones and hasn't played in the NHL in years. A total waste of every form of space.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is):

Kerfoot. Has sucked since day one, will continue to suck until the end. Kadri trade was an unmitigated disaster. So glad Kadri proved every idiot that doubted him wrong.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is):

Leafs fans rarely think anybody sucks at the start of the season.

Engvall. Solid player, has scored 20+ at every level, skates well, has size.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was:

If he quit, that would have been the best possible move for the team.

Seriously, he's turning into JFJ and it's costing this franchise it's best chance at a Cup in decades.

If I was GM, I would have:

Fired everybody. Time was up when they lost against Montreal, now it's just a waste of the limited time they have left with Matthews.

Traded Nylander for help on the blueline (Chychrun or Jones with salary retained). Or add some pieces (Robertson or Liljegren) and call Anaheim about what it would take to acquire Drysdale + Gibson.

Offload Muzzin, Holl and Simmonds for cap space flexibility.

Try to acquire Zacha for Kerfoot (can't play as a shutdown 3C or PK). Zacha was a steal for the Bruins.

Try to go after Talbot, Fleury or Gibson.

Signed more depth on D, especially the right side. Ex. Stralman at 1 million.

Signed more playoff depth performers. Ex. Kessel at 1.5 million.

Hired a head coach with a no non-sense, winning / defensive pedigree ex. Tortz, Quenneville, Trotz, Cassidy.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2022-23 Leafs:

Same strategy, same results. Lots of goals for, lots of goals against followed by playoff disappointment. Might win a round with the right 1st round match-up but not the Cup. Winning a round may feel like winning the Cup for this team at this point.

You should value my predictions this year because: Unbiased opinion

The Leafs will finish: 2-3

The main reason for this is: Offence

The biggest surprise will be: Steady Goaltending

The biggest disappointment will be: Audrey Kubel

Oh my God, why does Dubas think this guy can play in the NHL?: Engvall. Softer than Freddie the Goat. Same skill.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Liljegren, overrated, can’t play defensively.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Holl, he’s close to passing Brodie as the second best Dman

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was:
