To me .. Flames can do a retool very easily... they have top flight goalie... excellent F pieces and Solid D...
Get a boatload or as much as you can and roll.
No reason with cap space and picks and prospects this team cannot flourish. |

It's a credit to the franchise that they've never tried to tank intentionally. I think the team as a whole has a lot of pride that makes it hard to intentionally lose games, that integrity always been a part of the Flames identity and it's hard to shake. That comes from ownership down and while I'm sure a lot of it is profit motivated, that hard working identity is something that makes the Flames the Flames.
That being said, I totally agree that they should be seriously considering tanking. In today's NHL you really have to rebuild at some point if you want to contend for the cup. This could be a great opportunity to start it, they have the assets to make some strong moves and some decent young pieces that can still be there when it starts to turn around. |

Flames have never picked higher than 4th oa. They’ve been treading in mediocrity for too many years. Maximize the return and play the kids. |

Interesting perspective Sean, you forgot to mention the Oilers drafting Nail Yakupov 1st overall from a Flames perspective the Oilers should've taken Ryan Murray. |

It's no longer "should they rebuild?", it's "how should they rebuild?".
Please not Kadri. |

Suggesting a tank is rich. The rules have been changed due to the Oilers using the seasons to get 1st overall players. They got rid of the one that allowed NY to get 1st overall. So a tank is only going to get you one good player.
Whether it's the right decision to rebuild or not, you have to have an ownership group that doesn't mind missing revenue on a half full arena or potential lost revenue from the playoffs. The Flames lost a couple of players that helped get the 1st in the Pacific. But losing Gio was thought to be the end of Calgary. If the Flames do nothing, then a drop in the standings is natural. But it's not even more than a week after FA started. Teams are built through trades as well.

The Flames need to shed the kuckle draggers that Sutter likes to deploy. I would honestly blow it all up and go scorched Earth like Chicago. |

The sad thing is they weren't tanking... management was just that inept. Buffalo and Toronto were tanking. |

Not sure what either of you would have to offer, or what you intend to use him for when you have him, but I am certain that an NHL team will be able to outbid you. |

Thanks for not kicking us in the pants Sean. Good blog and I agree they need to do a full on rebuild.
Unfortunately I do not think Calgary’s ownership cares about anything besides earnings. |
