I think Paul Maurice is going to be super happy getting to

A) coach THAT team instead of the (frank)ing Jets and

B) Live in Miami/Fort Lauderdale/Boca Raton/whatever instead of WINNIPEG.

Barkov and Co are going to love him.

Curious who he’ll bring in, too.

What a gut punch for Brunette. You'll always have 4/5 of a Presidents Trophy, Andy.

That being said: solid hire.

Florida should get ready for some 3 line hockey, with Barkov getting at minimum 25 minutes per game.

I’m wondering if it was a mutual thing. I remember Brunette saying something along the lines that hinted he was on the fence of being a head coach again. He was going to talk to his family, etc., so I didn’t get the vibe he was gunning for it.

I’m looking forward to seeing what scheme he instills in this team.

There is a reason why Paul Maurice has the record for most losses by a NHL head coach. Good luck to you guys in Florida! He will do great in his first year there and after that it will be all downhill.

Interesting. Sometimes you forget these guys are human and aren't all gunning for the top job.

he's 55 and has coached the 4th most NHL games in history.

384-391-99-46 with Hartford/Carolina

391-290-84 with Toronto and Winnipeg

I sense a pattern there.

Why? That's my reaction.

What did Zito see that makes him the guy? Why will he succeed in Florida while he's been mediocre elsewhere? Does he have the special-adjustments insights, visionary playoff structures, motivational techniques, etc. to get us past Tampa and over the top?

I trust Zito, but he better be wearing his sales hat when he makes the official intro.

Guys who have played for him say that Paul Maurice has the ability to make you believe you're capable of doing things you maybe otherwise wouldn't.

He's not a guy that's going to be great for the development of a rookie, but if you're in Win Now mode, he's pretty good at getting you there if you've got leaders that will buy in.

I agree with Matt Ross, Brunette wasn't sure of himself and the pressure that would be put on him. I think everybody was disappointed in him during the playoffs and he didn't want to be under a microscope. One day though I think he'll be a great coach. He just needs a little more seasoning.

That being said, Zito made some bad moves. I didn't like the move to get Reinhart. I didn't like getting Giroux, Chariot, or Hagg. He gave up the future for these dinosaurs that will all now walk except for Reinhart. Hockey is all about puck possession and foot speed, none of these guys could break in fast enough to get the puck. In his first year, Zito added speed and toughness in Duclair, Verhaeghe, Grudus, Hornqvist, and Lomberg. Thorton was a hood ornament. It was a mistake in getting rid of Frank the Tank.

I am getting the sense that you are implying that the Jets were a pretty good team then. I am confused by this because you have also stated that the Jets are also bad.

Mediocre. I think the Jets have historically had some good offensive weapons that have carried them with some pretty awful depth.

Most of the Canes/Whalers teams Maurice coached didn't have much going for them in either regard.

the 98 Canes, for example, had 5 forwards who played more than 40 games and scored fewer than 5 goals.

Some people call me Maurice because I speak with the pompatus of love. Paul loves the panther's peaches and wants to shake their tree. signed the joker.

Please take note Zito. Defense wins championships. Sakic did all that winning without blowing 3 years of 1st rounds

It will be very interesting to see how Paul Maurice corrects the errors of this core group. Also, who will be his assistants? I'm excited to see how this all plays out.
