He got 8 year money IMO, still love the guy. Nylander got more % of the cap then Mackinnon…kinda of a fail there too. Marner was overpaid by a bit too.

But who cares about CAP when we’re on the eve of winning the cup. 😑

- Garnie

The fail is failing to consider the importance of comparing contracts signed in different years (and with different team caps).

Mac was a steal but the Avs got lucky b/c he's was pretty flat his first 3 years production wise.

And if he got a 6 year contract you wouldn't know if he'll be a Leaf either. Best would have been 4 years. 5 is second best
- bobbyisno1

7 years to UFA for these guys.

3 year ELC ....so 4 is the worst for the team.

It's why most guys do 3 or 5+

nope ...4 walked him to UFA ....5 bought 1 year.

So he bought himself 2 extra years of a huge salary. Smart.

Crap, now I have to look up a word. I wasn't in the mood for learning anything today.

Yup. I'm sure Dubas would have bought more years (at a higher cost) if he could have afforded it.

Matthews said he wanted a longer deal ..problem was it was going to take up more cap space ...that Dubas didn't have.

I could see McDavid leaving Edmonton, cause you know, Edmonton.
But how many star players actually leave.

In the past 20 years? Kovalchuk and Tavares? Chara maybe, but he wasn't really a "star" at the time, just a budding one.

Dubas did right by Dermott, he gave him an opportunity to get ice time somewhere else which wasn't going to happen here..

Next on that trade list, should be Holl

- PatC80

I think Holl is a useful 7D, like an upgraded Marincin. Would he be happy in that role? Probably not, but who knows.

The other factor is age: our D core is getting up there. We have Rielly/Laboosh, bunch of old guys, and then 2 young guys.

How healthy/effective Muzzin/Brodie/Gio remain will factor into what happens with Holl, who's 30 himself (kind of surprised me actually).

I think it will become more common in the coming years. I agree I could see McDavid leaving as well, but it really depends on their success in the coming years. JT's contract will be up the year before

Bunting is back, lineup looks decent.

Leafs projected lineup:

Bunting — Matthews — Marner
Mikheyev — Tavares — Kerfoot
Nylander — Kampf — Engvall
Kase — Blackwell — Simmonds

Rielly — Lyubushkin
Muzzin — Brodie
Giordano — Liljegren

Campbell

I suppose. Even then, all are that lower level of "star." Aside from Lindros or Gretzky moving around for money and prestige, it's hard to see the best players of their time moving...except Matthews who will go to the perennial poor and poopty Coyotes.

I guess I forgot Panarin. He might actually be the best one of the lot in terms of elite talent moving.

Every line is a scoring threat, but we'll have to weather the physical storm that TBL is going to unleash. Gotta play at top-gear tempo out of the gate to counter that.

The what-if factor is going to be what kind of a game are the zebras going to call: regular season (maybe even pre-season?) like last game, or just naaaah...

Panarin, Bobrovsky, Pavelski, Niedermayer. The thing is, most of the good players like that get traded before they sign elsewhere, but would have left. Stone, Karlsson etc etc.

McDavid has a NMC so hell get to choose, or wait for UFA if he does in fact leave.

Yep, that is the biggest factor. I hope they continue to call it the same, if for nothing else to remain consistent.

I am a bit worried having Kase on the 4th line with Perry/Maroon gooning it up.

He signed his deal before he got really good, its funny how people completely forget this when saying he took less. Nylander had produced more then him previous to his contract year, and this is two years later when salaries were up.

Nathan MacKinnon

2013-2014 82 24 39 63P
2014-2015 64 14 24 38P
2015-2016 72 21 31 52P

William Nylander

2016-2017 81 22 39 61P
2017-2018 82 20 41 61P

- Archaic

So Nylander gets the bonus because he couldn’t make the team right away after being drafted and Mack could? There are considerations that need to be made when negotiating. Everyone and their dog knew who the better player was. No way I give Willie the same cap % but that’s just me. Anyways…GO LEAFS GO
