Should they have paid extra for the First Nations night? I feel like $100 and free tickets is fair for ~5 minutes of work to be honest.
If you read the article she puts forward some pretty wild arguments. I'm all for Truth and Reconciliation, but this is just someone whining about nothing.
You’re right. Louie should have sang for free. - Shuswap Wap
I don’t know what artist earn, and I respect an artist for saying no. No, I don’t think a special night deserves a special wage, each person is going to negotiate their own compensation.
But if it was support white people night and they asked Shania Twain to sing the anthem I’m pretty sure it would cost more than $100.

Wouldn't Kid Rock be more appropriate for White People Night?

Yeah no, unless it was like something like in the Heritage Classic or in the SCF, I don't see the Canucks asking anyone of any real standing in the music industry to do the anthem. What does it do for their career that doing a full concert wouldn't do?

If you’re a fan of the team and not a terrible singer and want to go to a game for free, sure why not. If you’re a professional artist and their rate for a performance, even one as short as an anthem is $100, then you likely aren’t doing the job.
The team gets what they pay for.
On this night, the anthem singer wasn’t (going to be) there as a fan, she was being asked to represent her people. I can see her point, it’s kind of insulting. But she didn’t do it, so whatevs.

Not really. As a musician, I understand and respect the stand they are taking. 100 dollars and tickets to a game is insulting. Not only to the people performing, but to the profession. Good on everyone for speaking out.

Now that a bunch of people have gone public, I feel kind of bad for the performers who actually did perform. I hope they don’t get bad press for selling out.

I doubt it. It's art, there's always gonna be options of different quality and value. Now I know why Mark Donnelly didn't seem too broken up about losing his job though.

Was a good gig for him, he only ever sung half an anthem.

I guess you could scalp the tickets prior to the game. I sat behind Mark D one night, in the corner lower bowl. Those are probably $150-$200 each. Maybe you get $300 for the pair, that’s $400 for the performance and you go about your business after you’re done.

Consider even the most minute expenses. Time, travel, parking, food, preparation and rehearsal. It quickly becomes a pay to play scenario. Have you ever fed your family or paid a bill because of having exposure? Why would you expect an artist to do the same? For the service they are providing, they deserve fair renumeration. This isn't even out of pocket money for the Canucks. I've been offered free tickets many times for doing less.

My workplace doesn't pay for my gas to drive to the office, or parking, nor do they compensate me for the schooling I had to take to do my job competantly, I guess it's kind of a blurry line. Obviously for an org as rich as the Canucks they could shell out more, but I don't think it's outrageous considering how small the workload is.

Ok. I don't expect you to fully understand if you've never performed. Much respect to the artists that pushed the issue forward.
