Mostly I scoff because maybe 2% of the people who read and discuss in these spaces could articulate exactly what an NHL “system” is. Ok, maybe 0.02%. For the record, I’m not one of them.
If doesn’t surprise me that a rookie coach with a lot of great ideas had trouble instituting a complicated system in a culture that accepts very little change.
And, as you point out (and NH too), the system needs to fit the people, but by all accounts, Green got his guys, and that cost both him and Benning their jobs. - 1970vintage
You probably recognize certain systems. There isn't a large overwhelming amount in hockey. Where they usually differ is how they are used and at which points in the game.

I’ve coached minor hockey, but as volunteers the expectations are pretty low. Nothing more than some F1-F2-F3 stuff.
My point is that people who talk sports (in general) know a lot less than they think.
Listened to a great interview with Johnny Oduya (32 thoughts) today. One topic was that in the past (so when all you old fogies were playing minor/junior hockey) defensemen worked on skills and after being drafted they would play a few season in the AHL where they would actually learn how to play defense, at an NHL level. Now, if they aren’t learning about situational play by age 12 it’s too late by the time they finish junior hockey because of how the NHL is trending younger and younger.
“Connor McDavid scored 100 points - again. But how about this:
He's the 19th player in NHL history to record five 100-pt seasons, and he's only in his 7th season. Sidney Crosby is the only other active player with as many 100-pt seasons (six), and he's been playing for 17 years.”

Yes he is but led them to no success in the PO’s. 2nd coming of Marcel Dionne?

Different times for sure. All kids are learning everything quicker with the evolution of technology. They have more tools at their disposal. More evolved equipment of the trade and more knowledgeable teachers.

All good but there is one big omission. Self teaching aka student of the game like it has always been. With all the resources out there today it’s much easier than the good ol days.
Last week of the pool before the PO’s. matched up against Retinalz for the last PO spot. No quit but tbh be nice to lose out & have my season over. It was not fun dealing with everything the season threw at us.

They are still learning a lot of the same things for sure. It's not like the rink has changed shapes. Vintsy got me thinking about how many things in systems are essentially the same since like the 70's. Like forechecking, backchecking, breakouts, positional coverage etc. The equipment has changed and the speed at which they are done, but the fundamental concepts remain exactly the same.

Add to that age means nothing to me. Once a pro & paid like one no excuses. Develop yes babysit never.

Yeah, it was screwy. I'm relieved MacKinnon is back. Glad Neemer is out of the playoff picture. His team is really tough to beat right now.

You get a much morw finished product, but also the competition is so much higher to be good enough for the show. Not to mention how athletic you need to be to compete at all speed and skill wise.

That’s what he is saying. That in the past you could make up for a lack of understanding with pure physical tools, and now you need the understanding as well (early on) or you will have trouble standing out.

Generally why Euros are more mature given how they are raised compared to North Americans. Also why I think NCAA prospects being older can step in sooner & succeed.
