Lou needs to stop limiting opportunities for the younger players. Clutterbuck is a asset but let the rest go, play the youth from here out. There was some pretty creative horse trading done today but not here.

Based on the era he played in, his point totals are far from hall of fame worthy.
But then, the borderline hall of fame Sedin twins are about to get in first ballot solely because they are twins.
The Sedins are more hall of fame worthy than Tonelli. However, the Sedins are as first ballot hall of fame worthy as Tonelli is hall of fame worthy.
So, maybe you’re right?

Great day for the Islanders and their fans. Every team should have an antiquated GM that literally does nothing but add old veterans and slowly trade off the young talent for pennies on the dollar |

A lot of anger in here today. I certainly get the frustration but I just want to point out that some of the best moves the Islanders ever made during our last GM's brutal Tenure were the trades he didn't make.
I am happy they are keeping Cal and Parise and pretty happy with the numbers. I really hoped we would have traded Greene and/or Chara to get something in return but it sounds like there wasn't much of a return... same with Varly. Both Chara and Greene indicated they wanted to finish out the year on the Island too... so hopefully giving them their wish helps in recruiting UFA's this summer as opposed to any backlash with moving them for little and having any "I should have never signed there" backlash...
anyway, trying to be the glass half full guy. We aren't going to make the playoffs so keeping them might help improve our lottery odds.

I think that maybe the anger in not making any moves stems from the last 3 years. We were so close to the finals the last 2 years and this season it's like watching it slip away. We've all seen way too many bad seasons, so that may be the back-of-the-mind thought. One bad season leads to another. We want them to take that last step and finish it off. Maybe Lou makes a couple moves prior to the draft. Maybe during the summer. Maybe he's active in the UFA market. Or maybe he thinks this is the team and stands pat. Either way, I trust Lou to do what's right for the club and trust that he'll make any necessary changes.
Obviously Chara wanted to stay and finish out the season. Maybe he wants to finish his career in the jersey he started it in. I guess we'll all find out soon enough. I personally am looking forward to next season. This year I can watch the playoffs and not have to stress about my team. Which does suck, but nothing I can do about it.

Lou came about as close to openly saying that he's going to wheel and deal this summer yesterday at his press availability, so I expect that we're still somewhat in on Chychrun and, since it certainly seems likely to happen, Forsberg will test UFA and we'll be strong players for him too. |

What kind of moves will it take to make enough cap space? I was just checking out the Islanders cap situation and it looks pretty tight for a couple of years. Are they gonna go the buyout route? |

They have over $11M in cap space this summer. There's a real chance that they try to move Varlamov and/or Bailey, who each have a $5M cap hit.
If they do manage to find a way to trade for Chychrun, there's a real good chance Beau is part of that deal. That'd make it almost an even-money swap (Chychrun makes 450k more than Beau)
The only RFA's that need deals are Bellows, who will be a minimal cap hit, and Dobson...who's likely going to want a bridge deal that will keep the price down a bit. I'm guessing Dobson comes in around $4Mx3yrs.
There's some other minor contracts that could be filled in (ie: 3rd pair LHD) real cheap with either young guys on ELC's or vets. If Varly does end up getting moved, they'll need to find a veteran backup goaltender as well.
It'll take a little work, but it's not impossible. And all of that is assuming they land all the big fish I just mentioned. If they whiff on Forsberg and decide to add one or two other cheaper players things may be simpler. |

I don't think it's likely at all that they move Varly this offseason. By the 2023 trade deadline, depending on our standing, we'll see. |

Sorry take two bc
@CapFriendly
doesn't include Parise extension yet. #isles projected cap space this summer after Parise/Clutterbuck extensions:
$11,255,833
The Cap going up to $82.5m according to Betteman - so $12.2 ish space for whatever they need to do..
have to sign RFA Dobson and RFA Bellows if you want to keep him.. Assuming Greene, Chara, and Hickey are gone.
My guess is IF they need the cap room to fit someone they will move Varly and sign a lower cost back up. and if they can move Bailey they will move him.

Why shouldn’t we trust Lou? Ever since he’s been here he has turned this franchise into a respected one vs the clown show it was for decades. I truly believe the road trip start, Covid screwing by the league and injuries had a lot to do with this teams inconsistent play this year. I think the offensive and defensive cores on this team are capable and if Lou makes a couple tweaks we will hopefully take that next step next year. Also as I believe Keeaner said this team will come out with a vengeance next year. |

Well they're not going to get him for Bailey, Bellows, and a 1st. He's a 23yo high-end defenseman that's signed for three more years at $4.6M
They may not even have good enough assets, that they can afford to move, to get him at all |

They were rumored to want 2 firsts and a second.. or as much as 3 firsts depending on how high of a first round pick you have.. if we don't win the lottery would you be willing to give them our first this year and next and throw a second in too? I would.. they you have another young high end D-man. |

No Vaccine so wherever he is playing I am guessing he isn't having random blood clots or Myocardial infarctions... Maybe he could be included in the trade for Chychrun as no shot he will play for Lou after deciding not to conform.

I think he’s in Sweden still or wherever he got exiled but I thought maybe he’d still be in play for us at some point but you’re probably right about that. |
