They want to bring in someone who can work with and play in a pairing recently-drafted Owen Power. The idea is to find him a mentor that can work with him as he makes the jump to the NHL.

Dreger notes, “There’s not a high level of urgency here. They’d like to get something done between now and the deadline, but if they don’t, then they are comfortable testing the unrestricted free agent market in the summer.”

He'd be crazy not to as him signing and playing a few games would mean the first year of his ELC would be used.

I'm guessing his agent knew about the ELC slide exception, and that played a part in his return to Michigan.
