Trevor Neufeld: It All Just Seems Like Madness

More time off ahead as the Flames play next on Tuesday, January 18th against the Florida Panthers at the Saddledome.

I turned the game off after two periods. Zadorov was an anchor out there and the main factor in both of Paul's goals.
Then the Sens hemmed the Flames in their D-zone for 2 minutes straight and I had flashbacks to last year.
They also played a full 20 minute period, right to the horn; the Flames took the last 2 minutes off and Ottawa made them pay. There's no way there was going to be a comeback in the third after that effort.

The fight was good.

Zadorov getting caught pinching for a hit made me want to turn the game off. Its frustrating seeing his three inches of height and 15 pounds on Micheal Stone keep him out of the lineup.

Speaking of lineups, I liked where the piece ended and didn’t add additional notes. Here are the practice lines today:

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman
Lucic-Monahan-Dube
Lewis-Richardson-Ritchie
Ruzicka-Pitlick

Hanifin-Andersson
Kylington-Tanev
Zadorov-Gudbranson
Stone

Slotting out Pitlick for Richardson seems more like re-arranging deck chairs. Pitlick keeps re-aggravating his shoulder injury. What harm would be done in shutting him down for an extended period?

This year it’s his shoulder, last year a torn ACL. Chances are one if those sparks up in the playoffs.

Also, City Council unanimously voted to ban Gondek from negotiating the new arena deal.

She voted against the deal when she was a councilor, I'm not sure how the hell people voted her for mayor. First thing she does when elected is puts in place that climate policy to add additional costs. The agreement was signed, shovels were ready to build but she had to have it her way.

Yeah this mayoral election was a turd buffet. Nenshi spent too much, but I would still prefer him over Jyoti playing political games over social issues in Quebec with our tax money.

On a hockey related note, Sam Bennett scored another hat trick tonight. This time against the Wild.

Wonder if flames management is wishing they gave him the same level of opportunity they gave Sean Monahan …..

Goals above replacement is pretty much a nonsense stat, but it's not actually measuring a player's offensive output. It's the same idea as WAR in baseball, but they just decided to go with GAR in hockey. It's supposed to combine everything a player does on the ice into one number. So it does take into account how well a player is defensively.

I also think there is reason to complain about the players he listed. I think Gudbranson and Zadarov have been fine as a third pairing, but Zadarov makes twice what he's worth. Pitlik, Richardson, and Lewis could be swapped out for pretty much anyone in Stockton and I don't think they'd be any worse.

It's easy to say that now, but he was given lots of opportunities in Calgary and he never did anything with them. Every time he got a shot on the top line, he did nothing.

He was given many short stints …sometimes not even full games …,maybe if they didn’t try to force guys like chiasson, and other 4th liners on the top line instead of him he would still be a flame

Nearly a point a game player in Florida when given full time top 6 minutes

Completely agreed. The go-to for so many Leafs fans when their team is losing is expected goals based on shot attempts. A nice statistic to cling to when your team runs into a hot goalie or an effective defence that collapses to the net properly in their own end.

You’re right on the second point too. None of those guys are perfect in their own end. It’s good to assign one role for them, but it’s impossible to stop elite talent from moving the puck effectively every play.

Sam Bennet is on fire! Man too bad he didn't work out in Calgary. We could use some of the things he brings to the game right now.

Now I almost get the feeling that Bennett never wanted to be a Flame, its like he played poorly on purpose to get out of Calgary. Then he goes to Florida and his the player we all expected. On another note I think the Flames probably had a better offer on the table to get Eichel but he probably said hell no to playing in Canada.

This team really has 1 line that can score consistently. The 2nd line is not consistent enough, the 3rd and 4th line are not good enough defensively to shut teams down. So yes, Kent has every right to criticize the GM for the moves or lack of.

I understand that we are harder to play against but do you really think we can hang with teams like Vegas, or Colorado in the playoffs?

You have to be an idiot to actually believe that an NHL player is going to play poorly on purpose. To what end? Bennett's time in Calgary cost him millions, maybe even tens of millions. He didn't fit in Calgary, and of course some of the blame falls on him, but there's no way he was playing poorly on purpose.

Florida won 9 -2! Just wow, how good is this team. And offcourse Bennet got another multi-point game. And I agree, it's the system and also player being happy that makes things work. Bennet was not fitting in the systerm and most importantly he wasn't happy. Just think about ourselves, we do much better on things when we are happy than we are stressed or under pressure. In Florida, Bennet is not expected to be scoring every game but in Calgary he was. Good for Bennet and I hope the 2nd rounds we got turns into something good.

Bennett was trained growing up to be a offense first player. Learned his trade on one side of the blue line. Once drafted they attempted to make him more of a 2 way guy. Didn't work out, nor should it be expected. It failed with Yakupov in Edmonton. and created a failure of a player. It failed in Calgary and started to create a failure in Bennett. A different style coach has brought the better player back out. It's not that SB was ever a bad player, but he didn't live up to expectations.

Imagine if the Pen's did that with Crosby? dropped him to the AHL to teach him the defensive end of the game or in COL with MacKinnon, or again in Edmonton with McDavid.... Wouldn't be acceptable. None would be bad players... but not the same.

Exactly Red
He was never given prolonged opportunity on the top 6. So many haters in here because he showed emotion and took some extra penalties. All he did was out perform the team every playoffs only to get demoted to the 4th line the following season. He was pigeonholed into a bottom 6 role by too many crappy coaches this team has had. Nobody could think on their own and see what a player he could have been. Exactly the type you win in the playoffs with. Treliving should be fired, he done sfa to replace Bennett and now with a broken Monahan, this team has 1 top 6 center and a bunch of bottom 6 centres. There’s no way Johnny resigns here with this roster, going to be hard to get Chucky on a multi year as well.

Bullish!t, difference is Bennetts having fun and feeling appreciated. He’s been given more opportunities in Florida than he was ever given here.
