I also think it depends who the Leafs lose to the Kraken.
Is it Kerfoot, Hall or Dermott.
If Kerfoot is gone, then it open up a little cap space for a move like this |

What happened to Kassian this year? Lack of fans? Injuries? He looked disinterested the few games I watched. |

Exactly what Toronto needs, another disinterested player to replace a guy like Hyman, who goes to the net without dragging his knuckles on the ice. |

The Rangers would jump on Zack in a heartbeat. But what is his support system in Edmonton.and could the Rangers duplicated it in New York |

I doubt the Oilers move him in division, but I'd like to see Zach in Winnipeg. He brings the toughness that the Jets lack.
I know you're suggesting his contract is a bad one, but its not unmanageable. I think the Oilers would feel the loss of Kass quite quickly. |

When Shanahan said "killer instinct" I don't think he was being quite that literal.

Huge win for the Oilers if they can find someone to take Kassandra.
How about that James Neal contract. huge $ to eat popcorn. Holland’s a genius!
Kocksgoin was a last ditch slap by Chia. Showed them a thing or 2! |

This writer is on a crack saying the penguins never looked competitive against the Islanders. The Penguins flat out dominated the series but Jarry couldn’t stop a puck and the backup was injured. Kassian might be a good fit in Pitt however. Has he ever fought Wilson? |
Something around Kassian for Zucker would be a way to get each team what it may want: cap space and toughness for PIT, a top-6 W for EDM. |
Hard no on Kassian for the leafs, he would never replace Hyman. To much money for what he brings and doesn,t bring it very often. There will lots of playes like him or better for less money. |
Pens dominated the isles in all but one game and got sunk by goaltending…
Wait…. Can kassian play goal? |
Bad contract, no one wants it |

Back in the days of Hall, Eberle, Shultz, the Oilers were the girly team of the NHL.
It looks like a bunch of people want the Oilers to go back to being the girly team.
Such short memories.
Kassian's contract might not be a steal, but its not hurting the team, loosing him might.

Neal, Russel, Koskinen, and the buyouts were what was, and is hurting the Oilers.
In Neal and Koskinen, you had $10mil sitting on the bench, plus Kris Russel 4mil (way overpaid), and $4,583mil of dead cap space.
That adds up to over $18mill in 2021 that was wasted money. Thats a lot of good players that money could have bought.
Kassian and Turris are not breaking the Oilers |
For 2021-22
Russel drops to $1.25mil, dead cap drops to $2.25mil.
Neal and Koskinen are still over $10mill.
But I HATE BUYOUTS!
IMO a team CAN NOT win the Cup with millions of dead cap. If you buyout Neal, Oilers would carry $1.9mill for 4 YEARS. Add that to Sekera and "A SECOND LINE WINGER" is lost in dead cap.
Ride it out or do some fancy shenanigan trading. |

I don't find the framing that people of your persuasion use regarding "dead cap" very compelling. So long as Neal is under contract, the cap being used on him is dead cap anyway. Using your terms, a 1st line winger worth of cap is dead cap if we don't buy him out. If you buyout Neal, you free up 3.9mil- a 2nd line winger- for 2 years at the cost of 1.9mil for 2 years after Sekera's buyout penalty of 1.5mil is gone.
With this in mind, what's more important: 4mil in extra space for each of the next 2 years or 2mil in extra space in 3 and 4 years? For me, that's a very easy decision. |
