I blame Matthews for the OT goal, he had tons of time to get back up the ice but turned way too soon. Rielly could have played it better but I’m sticking with blaming Papi.

I think Rielly could have done everything better. The only thing he did correctly was be in his position - which is rare of late. He couldn't decide if he was going to try and block the pass or stop the shot.

In the next-gen game, if we ask a 6 year old - they know the defenseman's job is to take away the pass and let the goalie focus on the shooter. Why doesn't Rielly know this? Why do we all ask this question so often? I'm not as angry at him as that guy who made an alt specifically to hate on Rielly, but I am willing to say that I'm in the camp as The Law. I'm reaching the point where next year, I'm probably willing to move on from Rielly to someone who can play some defense.

The mistake Matthews made was trying to slow down McDavid up ice. He ran a small bit of interference, but it doesn't change the fact that McDavid is facing forward and Matthews is facing backward. That part of the equation alone leaves Matthews in the dust. Had he foregone the poor attempt at interference and immediately skated back, he might have been up with Nurse. Obviously a 2 on 1 is a breakdown by someone and Matthews not being in the play is on him - but the critical flaw in that play is still that Rielly does nothing and leaves McDavid with both options open.

I was hoping Rielly did the Brodie and sprawled out on the ice to try to take away the pass

Agree

I said it last game “Rielly is dead to me”

Also, yes it was Matthews fault on the O T winner. He was likely still in shock from the save Smith just made on him

Teammate gets back when he could have none of this is needed, but yes, Rielly is not good defensively.

Hey mike aug

How did Reilly do tonight? 🤣

A minus 3

Guy doesn’t even know how to play a 2 on 1 in over time

Leafs and you are a joke. Sign him for 8/9 million. Scored 3 goals last year and this year

Leafs nation is a joke if they like this player

Cross check to the back of Marner 3 feet from the boards as he’s getting up from sliding.

Not sure how it was missed, or was it?

It really looks like the Preds are off the table as a trading partner. They’re sitting in a playoff spot with Chi in free fall and 6 games till TDL

I tend to agree, unless they dont want to let assets like Granlund walk for free.

Because it's a little different when the shooter is the best player in the game.

I'd rather force Nurse to make a good play.

And by the way, that's the same thing I'd instruct six year olds - because the odds of them making a good pass followed by a good shot are considerably lower than a kid getting off a good shot.

Didn't see the play/watch the game.

But in theory these should be called.

Unless you have the Shea Weber's "crosscheck penalty immunity" card of course.

The degree to which COL is dominating play this year is pretty remarkable. There is no team within 3% of them in score adjusted Corsi, scoring chances, or expected goals. The only team in the entire era we've had these stats that comes close to this performance is CHI in 09/10.

going to be a tough matchup for the Leafs in the cup finals

Odd a team with this record is a joke.
- RogerRoeper

there's definitely some emotional reaction that is changing in the fanbase...

where we went for years thinking "we aren't likely to win tonight"... now it seems that the expectation is "we should be winning EVERY night".

the delusion that unites us all

actually cracks me up - the margin of error or victory is so small in most of these games... a post/crossbar here or there, a silly deflection.

to me the biggest negative most recently is the "death of the powerplay".

add a goal every second game and the equation changes.

If you take away the pass it allows the goalie to come out and cut down the angle on the shot. If he doesn’t know oh he’s defending the shot or the pass he’s stuck back in the crease giving the shooter more open net. Nurse used it.

Be smart to move on from Rielly this summer, when he has a year left. The asset haul could at least help in finding a quality replacement.
