Oilers have absolutely no chance whatsoever. 7-2 Leafs, Matty hatty, Willy, Tavares, Galchenyuk, 🦒

Teams appear to be starting to pull away from low probability bets at the draft(less than 30% prob of becoming an nhler at the draft). From 2012 to 2017 they made up 25% of all skaters chosen. From 2018 to 2020 they made up only 13%.

One team in particular went from drafting low probability players 25% of the time from 2012 to 2017. From 2018 to 2020 its down to 4%. They only took one!

Any guesses which team? The 2018 starting point should give it all away...

spoiler...its the Leafs

will be interesting to see how that pans out a few years down the road.

the Hunter years drafting....suck

What do you think it says? I think it says that teams are taking fewer longshot chances with their draft picks and the Leafs are leading the way in reducing the overall percentage, having taken one in the past 3 years, which is about 4%.

"Longshot Picks" are the players who aren't safe to pick.

Is this saying the Leafs are picking the Biggs', Gauthier's etc of the world?

In the later rounds, I would suspect that's precisely the case. Landing serviceable assets from the draft who have some value rather than none can only help. In my mind if you can parlay a useful, but not serviceable to you, player into future picks, or an asset that you can use now, then stocking up those players is good. You're either moving the bump along the snake in a positive way with your asset management, or you're utilizing your assets to offset or afford the acquisition price of pieces that you need.

To the point of using a 1st round pick or 2nd round pick on players with low ceilings who project to be 6/7 D or tweeners isn't the point of that. The point is to get these players in the later rounds rather than waste the pick on someone who has less than a 1% chance of reaching their potential.

I would say that I'm still a big fan of swinging for the fences in the 6th & 7th round on some of these guys. At that point, your "serviceable" players are typically suspect.

its saying the Leafs are taking less risks on low upside picks

or players who have a very small chance of being an nhl player

I just assume that whoever the Leafs pick outside of the top 10 are going to suck.

Laugh all you want, but it's a system that's served me well over the past 40 years.

i think thats the point of that tweet...the leafs are getting away from picking those players who have a very good chance at sucking.

but also...again...ill wait to see how it plays out..i drank the hunter cool aide initially...cuz he spent more time scouting than anyone in the history of hockey (I was told).

But what kind of way is that to go through life, being right all the time? Seriously, what’s that like?

I'd go as early as the 4th round to start swinging for the fences.

I like Dubas and his idea for his players. He likes high skill and high skating. I think skating ranks the highest on his list and he is right in that idea I believe.

The way i see it is, you can trade skill. Difficult to trade "physicality". Also it's pretty clear you can get grit for cheap. Bogosian, Thornton to a degree, Simmonds, etc.
