Watching it, I think he ran the interference he could, but had to let up before it was a penalty. You have a forward skating backwards (Matthews) and the fastest accelerating forward in the league skating forwards (McD). As soon as Matthews is forced to stop interfering, McDavid can fly by and there's not a forward in the league that's keeping up with him turning around from skating backwards.
