I'm glad to see that he wants to make the Jets as soon as possible. Hopefully he will get a fair chance and if he is sent down its because of lack of skill not his age or experience. |

I am quite excited for Cole as well. I am hopeful that he gets the right coaching and guidance once he's up with the big club. In my opinion, I see him being the Jets first line Center in a couple if years, which will be great! |

From what I observed from watching Chevy is that he will only trade Laine once he's lost all value. Until then, he will hold on to Laine. |

I could still see the Jets trading Laine. But with the Covid pandemic who knows what this season brings?
Any Philly trade would have to start with a top pairing young d-man - not Gostisbehere! If it were to come to pass, it would likely be like a four-for-2 deal or something.

as for possible Laine trade;
I believe Chevy has told all interested teams what it would take from their respective rosters and has left it there. Chevy is not backing down from his ask, nor should he. If one of those teams circles back and gives Chevy his ask then the trade will happen, if not, well then it will not happen. |

Totally agree. Opposition teams already know what they need to offer to pry Laine away.
Would think the ask would be a top-pairing d-man, another player off the roster and/or prospect and a draft choice. Regardless, the price would be high.
In Philly, for example, the first name mentioned is either Provorov, Sanheim or Myers. Doubt the Flyers would deal Provorov. The others? |

I'm not convinced it has to be a top pair D but can totally see that being the ask. I do think Chevy would prioritize talent and team control as priorities. Konecny for instance is a winger we currently don't have anyone like and is on a great contract with term. If Philly offered up Konecny, Patrick, York and a pick ( which I highly, highly doubt they ever would ) would you say no cause it doesn't include an NHL ready top pair D? |
|
|

The Jets will see what happens this season before even thinking about trading Laine. If he is on the block the Jets need to get quality over quantity. This means a young #1 d-man and not a group of 2nd pairing d-men, 2nd/3rd line forwards, prospects or draft picks. |

Agree that talent - and team control- to be priorities. But also need. We need to improve the D before we go any place.
Yes Konecny. But would Konecny, Myers, and Farabee (or draft choice) work for Laine, Perreault and Niku?
Gives us a cost certain decent forward, a good young RD and a prospect (plus salary cap room). The Flyers get their much-wanted sniper, a fwd (UFA in one year) who should have some gas left in the tank (not empty) and a cheaper young D who could tale Myers' spot.
The Flyers get the player with most upside, but we get a decent return. If "no" then we stick. |

I like Myers a lot but i'm also very high on both Heinola and Samberg being full time NHL'ers here for a long time so I do not see the issues on D as much as others. Morrisey, Demelo, Heinola, and Samberg may all be a collection of 2nd pair D but they are all also on great contracts for a long time!! I see a lot of value in those 4.

its very possible I rank Konecny's worth much higher than others. He is the Exact player I wish we had that we currently do not. Would instantly be a fan favorite. |

Agree with what your saying about Morrissey, Heinola, Samberg and DeMelo. Problem being, as I see it, as you know, the first three are all LH d-men. So, long-term, that takes care of the LH side.
Therein lies the problem - the RH side. Don't see Pionk as a #1 d-man on any SC contender. Maybe I'm wrong, but think the Jets need a #1 RH d-man before being a contender. So, in my opinion, unless a young, promising RH d-man comes back, Laine stays. |

Travis Konecny is the best player on the Jets if you trade Laine for him tomorrow.
So Konecny+ has my full attention. |

Was going to post this on the thread about the Dano, Niku, Perfetti signings but as soon as there's a new Jets thread everyone moves on so I'll post it here even though it's not about Perfetti though I hope he's given a legit chance to make the team if it's obvious he's ready.. Lol
Anyway there was a story in the October 30th Wpg FreePress by Jason Bell about Niku where he interviewed the young Finn dman and Niku stayed here in Winnipeg after the stoppage and hasn't left, he's been training and working out and is up to 203 lbs. so he should be able to defend better with some muscle on his
6'1" frame which will help his chances of making the team, hopefully Maurice actually gives him that chance though.
Also said he hasn't talked to Chevy or Maurice in quite some time and signing with the Jets was what he wanted, has no interest in a trade.
So we'll see, maybe this is the season he sticks and if he does that could make a big difference with personnel decisions going forward in the next few years but the skeptic in me thinks they've already made their decision on Niku though and he's viewed as just an AHL callup at this point.

The Niku question is very interesting. It's something I found challenging to deal with when providing my Jets protection list for the Seattle blog. |

I would agree with you that Maurice and the team may have made their decision on Niku. He's an amazing talent but they had issues with the 2018/2019 season where he was suspended with the Moose on a road trip for breaking team rules. Rumors was that he had a blow out with one of the coaches and they benched him as a result. I don't know the truth to the reason but it was reported on the 1290 radio game broadcast that year. He then had the blowout with Charlie Huddy where he admitted to the Winnipeg media last year that he did damage by letting his temper get the best of him.
I know his draft year, he dropped from being a projected third rounder all the way to the 7th round. He did lose a lot of games that season missing quite a bit to injury/illness but possibly their is more to his temperament problems than what we know about for that many teams to pass on him at the draft. We usually don't find out until years later some of the things that come up with the interview process.
Maurice is known to be a coach loyal to his coaching staff and veterans. I could see Niku's conflict with Pascal Vincent's coaching staff and Charlie Huddy enough reason for him in why he would put in Bitteto last year over Niku if he felt he was a cancer with the team. My personal preference would be that we play Niku and replace Huddy as his defensive systems just seem stale.

In a perfect world, the Jets trade Pionk and have Niku take his spot.
But the Jets aren't bold enough to do that, so instead Pionk will get 50 points this year and the Jets will make him their highest paid dman, while Niku sits in the press box, gets picked up off of waivers, or traded for a 5th round pick. |

I think there's zero chance they protect Niku in the expansion draft.
I do see a trade of some sort worked out with Seattle which Niku may or may not be involved in. |

Fair points and there very well could be a personality issue with Niku, I really don't know one way or the other.
I just hope he's given a fair chance this season to sink or swim. |

Pair him with whoever is going to be the Jets 2nd pairing LD
Pionk should be viewed as a guy you sell high on. If the Jets had him with a contract term of 3 plus years still, then yeah you keep him. But they don't and will have to pay him big money for piling up PP points for a powerplay that was mediocre last year. |

I'm guessing the 2LHD will be Forbort, not sure how I'd feel about a Forbort-Niku pair but it might be okay. I'm sure it'd get roasted on the comment boards though.. π
Personally I thought Pionk was solid and I could care less about his point totals, he was very good at both ends of the rink but yeah I get your point about not wanting to overpay for his production on the powerplay which he wasn't great being the QB of.
Gotta wonder what Pionk's next contract will look like and what he might return in a trade. |
