This may mean Romanov will be 2nd pairing depending on how his play goes , it's actually better as you can have Petry guiding him and eventually Weber when they pair up

I get that, and of course you hope he plays well enough to fill that role, but going in the season you can't consider him in the top 4 imo, or plan on the fact that after 40 games under his belt he'll be ready

He's already paid top four money and that's before the raise he will most likely get.

You don't pay that much for a third pair defenseman.

And don't worry, Romanov should start on the third pair, as they said was the plan.
