One source I talked to believes this is a salary dump to open space to sign Pietrangelo (e3)
- Eklund
Really? Who is this one source? He's really uncovered an incredible twist to this story.
I can't believe no one had thought of this until now. I'm going to have to sit down.

Let's start the Price to Calgary rumors - Bo
The more likely move is Primeau to Calgary as part of a Gaudreau trade. Price was great in the playoffs but unless the Habs are retaining major salary, NOBODY is trading for a 33 year old Price at 10.5 x 6 years.

Habs needs to rest Price during the season. Habs also need to expose a goalie with enough NHL experience for the expansion draft. I wouldn't be surprised if the extended Allen for that purpose as they don't have one available now that can be exposed. Price cannot be exposed as he has non-movement clause.
MTL has plenty of picks. They could easily afford a 3rd round for Allen.
That is indeed a lot of cash spent on the goalie position. - GolfButler
I am still confused. I had the same thought about exposing him to Seattle. But, why would you pay that much for a back up that you still have to sign to an extension for that purpose?
If this is the plan, I should think it couldn't be any harder to find a back up that is under contract for an additional year and won't cost ~5% of the cap next season. |

They just have to extend Lindgren for another year and let Allan walk away as a UFA.
Bang, all problems solved. |

If this means the Blues are keeping Pietriangelo, then they won this trade, as for Montreal, this is making their 11.5 million per year dollar investment look doubtful. - Alexzanki
It's just for one year. Habs have plenty of cap space this year, after burying Alzner I think we still have like 12-13 mills left and only Domi as a RFA to sign (or trade) left. After that we can either re-sign Allen to a less expensive contract or let him go and look to our G prospects like Primeau.
Habs really needed a good backup that let Price play 65 games or less next season. We saw in the last playoffs the difference between a rested Price and an overworked one. |

Carey Price on the move?
Habs gave up a 3rd, so it wasn't a dump by the Blues........
Why else would Montreal do this? 4.35 Million cap hit next year - TheGame316

No, more like it's taking the work load off your elite goaltender who often gets overworked and ultimately has never had a reliable back up in his entire NHL career dating back to when he flip flopped with Halak at the beginning of his career. Not only does this give them a better chance at winning games when Price is not in the net it also gives him rest and more importantly keeps him fresh going into the playoffs. If it doesn't work out you can flip him at the deadline for basically the asset you gave up to acquire him
It's a win for both sides, let people have nice things |

I find it disturbing that you are both engaging in public swapping of lactational daydreams.

If this gives Price the rest he needs and they manage to make the playoffs (lots of additions hopefully from now till training camp) then it makes sense. |

OK but im not sure how you pay a back up 4.35 when you pay your starter 10.5? Who am I to question Bergeron after all he parlayed Kovalchuk into a 3rd round pick but this deal is very confusing?
