As many of you know, I've written about this guy before and was honestly shocked when a few teams like Buffalo and Minnesota made other choices, but the inevitable has happened and Bill Zito is the new GM in charge of the Florida Panthers.
It's a great move. Zito's knowledge and passion for the game is on a level rarely seen...and success follows him around. Remember this is a guy who left a VERY profitable job as a player agent (representing Kimmo Timonen, Tim Thomas, Tuukka Rask, Brian Rafalski and more) to take considerably less money as an assistant GM in Columbus for the simple reason that he wanted to be part of winning a Stanley Cup. It's not about money. It's all about winning.
In Columbus he was put in charge of the AHL squad in Cleveland and won a Calder Cup instantly in 2015-16 in one of the most dominant playoff runs ever. He also has very close ties to Bobrovsky and that should help Bob get on track in Florida. That is obviously of huge importance to Florida. The Panthers were all over the map this past season, but former GM Dale Tallon has put some strong pieces in place and I believe Zito will find the right connecting pieces making the Panthers an immediate force in the Division.
I also expect Zito to be a creative GM, which always makes the NHL more interesting for sure..
On Taylor Hall...
Darren Dreger and TSN are reporting that the Coyotes are making another overture to Taylor Hall today....As I've written previously it is largely believed that Hall will test the UFA Market and Calgary and Buffalo are leading the way as likely destinations. However, the Yotes do own his rights until that time comes...And with the recent loss of draft picks as a result of their scouting violations the Coyotes owe it to themselves and their fanbase to see if a deal can get done...
On the Penguins...
The Penguins have named Todd Reirden and Mike Vellucci assistant coaches. Reirden formerly had great success with the Penguins Power Play..Something that killed the Penguins in the playoffs the past few seasons...
