Taylor Hall needs to go to a team where he's not counted on to be a Franchise player. He's better suited to be a complimentary star player on a Cup contender like Hossa in Chicago complimenting Toews and Kane. Or like Phil Kessel in Pittsburgh complimenting Crosby and Malkin.

I fully agree in what your saying about Hall as a 3rd wheel if you will, but why should he except to get paid like he is a franchise player? What’s he done lately?

John Chayka was awful looking back, then he quit on the team when he realized what he put together... all class.
- Merkmayhem

Some people didn't need to look back and instead could tell that John Chayka was awful in real time.

Domi for Galchenyuk?

DeAngelo and a 7th overall pick for Derek Stepan and a Raanta?

Dylan Strome for Nick Schmaltz? Then Schmaltz gets $5.85M x 7 years. A bit cheaper than Keller who got $7.15M x 8 years.

Then his big splash is adding a washed-up Phil Kessel, before blowing another 1st round pick to rent Taylor Hall for half a year.

Oh, and despite cheating by secretly doing fitness tests on draft picks, Chayka presided over some of the worst drafting in NHL history. In 2017 they selected 9 players, 5 of them in the first 3 rounds, and not a single player has skated in an NHL game. In 2018 he takes Barrett Hayton at 5th overall. Zadina at #6 looks better. Quinn Hughes at #7 is already a superstar. What a complete miss at #5.

Anyway, Chayka was awful. I've said it for years. Looks like others have caught on.

I don't believe Hall will be paid as much as what he believes he deserves. However all it takes is for one GM to make a stupid offer (hello Dale Tallon signing Goalie Bob). GM's get excited at UFA time because they can fill needs without giving up assets. They know they'll be long gone after the player starts regressing.

But what they don't understand (Dubas) is that Cap space is an asset. If you're going to spend big bucks on a player then he'd better be worth it or else you're handcuffing yourself into building the rest of your roster. You're like Dubas looking to hit home runs on KHL free agents making close to league minimum hoping they'll pan out. Lottery tickets. You create glaring holes on your roster and you end up paying the price (Leafs).

If I'm Taylor Hall and a legit Cup contender comes calling (Colorado? Boston?) then I'm willing to take a haircut to sign there. Because odds are I'll have a bonafide 1C who can get me the puck and I can put up ridiculous numbers. I can compete for the Cup, still make millions and improve my legacy.

But if Hall is only about the money and could care less about winning then good luck. I still don't think he's getting anywhere close to 10 mil AAV. He's a former Hart trophy winner which is likely the hill his agent will die on during UFA talks. But I'd personally stay away.

He most definitely is at the cross roads of money or hardware.

Chayka traded/paid the Yotes into no mans land! The team was trending upwards, Until He wasted their cap space(which would be gold right now). And improperly rated his team, Which led to poor trades to go for it! And on top of it he didn't wait around to eat his "CROW" which is Tannerish!

No doubt, if he didn't leave, he deserved to be fired. Really just not a very good NHL GM. That analytic advantage just never kicked in.

Agreed. He could possibly even be the #2 if everything else is in the correct place, but most likely that’s the best scenario for him.

Unfortunately, he’s gonna come with a high price tag for being that kinda guy.

Have to agree with your great points. I think Hall wants to be on a contender and if it cost him some money and term he will pay for it. But I’d guess he is still going to get good money ($8.5M) and a 5-6 year deal from a winner.

I could be wrong.

How do you know Doan isn't all the things you want in a GM?
Or is he just to likely to be part of the "old boys network"
Chalka didn't work out then? Is this what your saying now?
You should do an article on his trades and where you feel they rank today as opposed to then!

- camfor

James, Could you do this please? You could even blame it on Ms. Cleo, Or Chayka not being a "true" analytics man\, Or "parity", Or "luck".
Would just love your input in the post Chayka Yotes world!

Well, Philbert Kessel had his worst performance since 08/09, Big T didn't do much, and first ballot hall of famer Darcy Kuemper was hurt, but returned to Conn Smythe form for the first 2 games of the playoffs before becoming a modern day Andre Racicot.

Clayton Keller is poised to enter that 8 year bargain contract next season, so look forward to seeing absolute canine dominance in 20/21.

Phil was just unlucky. When you shoot 2% you can't expect to score. It's a random event. This will never happen again. So Phil should score 40 goals next season. Keller and Schmaltz will both hit the 90 point mark. Kuemper should record around 20 shutouts. He just had the greatest season of all time for a goalie and could still win the Conn Smythe.

Kuemper has better career JFresh cards than Roy, Brodeur and Hasek. Rick Tocchet should be fired and replaced with a 20 year old who thinks differently than dinosaurs like Lou Lamoriello. The Islanders are only still playing because of luck. Coyotes need to sign their best player in franchise history Taylor Hall. An 8 year 80 million deal should get it done. He'll score 60 goals next year if dinosaur Tocchet is gone.

No surprise. Jimmy needed clicks. Played his usual politics soap box card. Got his pee pee whacked again. It's not the first time that's happened. It certainly won't be the last.

Jimmy doubles down (or is it triple?) on his excuses why the best team in the salary cap era Toronto Maple Leafs lost. It sounds like Burkey triggered little Jimmy's feelings...

https://editorinleaf.com/...rect-toronto-maple-leafs/

"The dishonest analysis and retrofitting of a result to fit a previously defined narrative is sickening. I find it far more offensive than the fact that the Leafs lost."

That's rich.

"I have watched Leafs for over 30 years, and this is the best team they’ve ever had. It is unfortunate that some bad luck has given volume to the worst kind of analysis."

You really out did yourself with this one, Jimmy. Have a good cry. Let it all out. Whine to your heart's content.

It's an indictment on his knowledge of the game. The current Leafs team is flawed. It seems as if everyone knows it but James Tanner.
