I’m sure Bowman had a hand in this pick. No way Uncle Dale would make such a mistake without outside influences.

It's hard to draft a starting NHL player. How many of those draft picks go on to be top 4 dmen or top 9 forward, then the numbers plummet to draft NHL Stars. Don't care what a team's need is, Best available, best available, best available. If you don't draft the best available player you just made the teams drafting behind you better. Worst part possibly passed on a stud NHL player.

McD was with the team then....

What was the pre-draft consensus about Beech? Wiz was probably way to young to have done a pre-draft analysis back then (it was 12 years ago)....

I know nothing more other than that. This rumour was well-known amongst the people I talked to at the time.

Wiz was doing drafts as far back as the 1980's. But he,would have to tell you when he started.

I KNOW that wiz had said on more than one occasion:

Tallon would not be.deterred. There were other names his scouts bandied about. Tallon.was dead set on Beach. He would not consider drafting anyone else.

As a pro Beach had a problem with balance on.his skates. Which is why he lost board battles..If Wiz cares to elaborate, he is your source......I know what I saw at games.... with Beach in Rockford and on the road vs Wolves. I even spoke to him and stood next to his dad after prospect games at the Edge in Bensenville
He seemed down to earth and a good guy..Just looked like young guy wanting to know where parties and where he could meet the ladies. He was a few inches taller tham.his dad btw..

As Paul Harvey would say, 'And now for the.rest of the..story..
Which actually others on this board or wiz can tell.

I've heard that story, too, Tyler. What a shame how another Tallon pick failed. Most people could choose Kane and Toews. But Tallon had a bad track record with his other first round selections. He gutted his Florida team and then went sign and trade happy...He was very good, among the best as a color analyst with Pat Foley. B

My favorite Beach memory is of him beating the tar out of fellow Hawk prospect Mathis Olimb. He was only 5" taller and 30lbs heavier than Olimb.

I don't know what scouts look at when assessing a player but I know that as a casual observer I was not impressed with Beach. I had a chance to see a game when he was still in Juniors after the Hawks drafted him. I went to the game with high expectations but went away totally perplexed after watching this game in which Beach was a complete non-factor. Many of his own teammates including Boychuk and Sbisa left a better impression. I remember telling the person attending that game with me that the Hawks had made a mistake.

That's the key. He obviously shut it down after the draft. Uncle Dale wouldn't have drafted the kid you saw that day.

Peeing in the water bottle and beating the crap out of your teammates is just good, clean, old school hockey stuff. What's the big deal?

Well you know how some of the Nancy’s on the board feel about the rough stuff (red font).

He lives! Hey Mo. Hope you are well.

The thought that usually occurs to me when re-visiting picks like Beach and Skille is how Uncle Dale seems to largely get a pass for such whiffs picking in the top 10 or top 11 in this case, probably because he laced them up if I had to guess.

Isn't that the guy who got his shoulder all jacked up like a week after he was signed?

That's what I was alluding to. What an idiot. Those two got into two fights during the camp. A fight is always between two willing combatants, but this was quite a mismatch.

Good one, Stevie! I wanted to work this into the blog and forgot.

I heard many players and coaches were extremely unimpressed with that performance by Beach.

He fought Olimb twice in one prospect game and Olimb busted his shoulder and was done for the year (if I recall correctly).

Except it wasn’t really a fight between two willing participants, more of a mugging.

Speaking of Dmen and the upcoming draft... I was just seeing if Wiz or someone had an opinion on Jake Sanderson. How does he compare with Byram from this past draft? This draft seems heavy on forwards.... but I believe we still need a LHD 1st pair to replace Keith down the road. I was impressed watching him during one of the USA games that was televised. Size/a speed combo and how he can “see” the ice.
