And how are the cities and states, and the private industries that rely on professional sports that are now broke going to react because "The show must go on" ends up not in the state? How many business around Wrigley Field (including bars restaurants) could survive a year with minimal revenue? - LAHawk
Completely agree but my wife and i won't be going anywhere until there is a vaccine or a treatment for what's going on
Ordered home run inn Pizza today curb side, i couldn't believe how many old people were walking inside without any protective measures. I guess on the bright side the government will have to pay out less social security and Medicare

Chances are they won’t still be closed by the time this scenario would take place though(July-August). Mitigation has proven to work. So they’re being safe and smart for the time being. - SimpleJack
I like your optimism but realistically if you look at history, if society is being responsible, no large gatherings until there is an inoculation or a proven effective treatment. |

The odds of those old people getting sick is still low. And they are allowed to decide for themselves. |

NHL should just kill this season. Come out with cap, any buyouts, and lottery draft order. Give the teams an opportunity to construct their roster and start new season on time or in November. I just don’t see this season or playoffs happening, but what do I know. - Angotti
I really hope this treatment they developed for SARS is a game changer, if it's not i fear any/all sports if they take place in the fall will be in an empty arena, kind of like the pro golf tournament this summer

What if there is no vaccine? There isn't one for AIDS or the common cold, among others. What if it mutates, like the flu, and that reduces the effectiveness of the vaccine even if one is developed? |

But over time if you are HIV+ you can live a longer healthier life unlike in the 80's or early 90's it was a death sentence. You can get the flu vaccine which can help.
In nature the animals 1st instinct to run or protect itself is the one that typically survives. Feel free to go out and mingle, I'll practice taking precautions myself, good luck

I have no idea how sterile Home Run Inn is - perhaps the alte machetes there are safe.
But because we do not have effective wide-spread community testing - or any good demographic data collection - we have no idea what the effective infection rate or death rate is for the community as a whole, or for any demographic group within it.
We will not see “herd immunity” until the immunity rate gets to 50% or more - this Coronavirus has an estimated R0 factor of between 2 and 3, meaning each infected person infects 2 to 3 others - very high (meaning very infectious) - flu has an R0 of about 1.3. Mitigation has worked by keeping infected people away from the 2 to 3 that they would otherwise infect (we’ll see what effect opening up areas too quickly - like, this weekend, Jacksonville beaches - has).
We won’t have herd immunity until there is a vaccine - which won’t be until next spring at the earliest.
Would anyone of you attend a sporting event with thousands of people until then?
It is also doubtful that anyone here - or anyone we know - contracted Covid-19 in January.
(I am not a medical person or epidemiologist - although I do listen to what they say. If any doctors who know about this want to contradict what I said, please do so. Not Dr. Phil or Dr. Oz or Dr. Pinsky, tho....) |

Yes. Tomorrow. 98-99% survival rate sounds ok to me.
Edit - ok with me if you decide not to do so. |

Ok, Mo - except that we have no idea what the morbidity rate is - or the mortality rate.
Johns Hopkins reported that that so far, 700,000 have tested positive in the US and 37,000 have died. That’s 5%.
Of course, the actual number of infections could be many times that - we haven’t had enough testing in place to know. And the evaluators are also understanding that there are likely many more Coronavirus related deaths than have been reported.
And - of the 700,000 identified infected Americans, how many still have the disease, and how many of those will die, increasing the 37,000?
So - what are the true rates?
And - if the R0 for this Coronavirus is 2 to 3 in normal life, what would it be for infected people in the close quarters of a stadium? |

Its gonna be less than 2% fatality rate, once they add in the thousands or tens of thousands that never got in the system because they had mild symptoms.
Sorry, Sage, I'm not worried about it for myself. |

I think sometime in the winter we will see filled arenas and theme parks and other large gatherings. We won’t necessarily need to wait for the vaccine. |

Then worry about it for those whom you might infect, should you acquire the disease. |

My friend also almost certainly had it while on a January vacation in the Caribbean. Says he had a dry cough, fatigue, and slight fever. No runny nose or congestion. Then after about 5 days felt fine.
I think those high at risk(based on age, pre-existing conditions, and other factors) will need to remain extra cautious and wait much longer to return to normalcy.
But the vast majority should be looking at only another 1-3 months depending on their region/county before they are able to go about their daily lives again. - SimpleJack
I am just wondering why this Corona virus is so media driven when the Saars virus caused over 100,000 fatalities but very little hype from the media. Is somebody cooking the books? You are correct us old people need to take extra precautions. However, i am just wondering what is worse if this lock down continues for another 2 or 3 months. Having the world economy go into a tailspin that will take 13 years to recover , food riots because we will half of the population out of work .
Suicides will be at a level we have never experienced. We have to understand that 99.8 % of people 55 years and younger who have had this virus have recovered. I am not sure what the solution is but keeping the young and middle age workers at home for a long extended time will cause even more deaths and despair. This is sure a crazy world we live in now, |

I do what I can to protect anyone. Life in a bubble is not possible for humans for any length of time. You can self-quarantine if it makes you feel safe from vectors like me. I'll let you know when I have the antibodies, and we can meet for potato pancakes. |

Agree. Also, what is the cost to morbidity and mortality of twenty million suddenly unemployed? The Mark Cuban's of the world don't have enough money to offset what those people have lost. This cannot continue for months; it is not sustainable. |

Huh? M & M's?
Anyway, a 2% chance of death - if I even catch it - means a 98% chance of not buying the farm. It's actually far less for me because I have no compromising conditions and I'm under 60. Bring it on.
This ain't Ebola, ffs. |

You seem to be the one that's so worried about the media.
I remember when Dr. Drew was blasting the media, i believe he said he'd be surprised if 20,000 people died from it. Like i told Mohel hey if you feel safe, enjoy, go out and you be you.
Honestly mental health has always been a problem, it always will be. |

Like i said i like your optimism, honestly though to me what's 1 to 1.5 yrs vs the rest of my life. If i was a gambling man i imagine there's many people out there who feel like i do. |
