Can you guys help me. What is our cap situation for the rest of the season after all the long term injuries ?

Zero space essentially. If they were to trade away Auston Matthews, that would just reduce the amount they go over the cap and into the LTIR buffer. Basically they can't really add any salary without equal amounts leaving, to my knowledge. Horton and Clarkson come off the cap after this year, most key players are locked up, so it's just youngers and depth players to sign, so things get very different then. It'll be interesting to see what they do with Muzzin and Barrie coming off the cap. Re-sign Muzzin? And Sandin and Liljegren into the mix? Rielly, Muzzin, Dermott, Sandin, and Liljegren.... For a total of about $14M? A little too early for some of these youngsters?

I wonder if we can trade that 1 mil to another team with a player in a deal - cant see us holding all these forwards into next season

You could be right, but I didn't think so. I thought it basically just lessens how much LTIR cushion the Leafs are using, because they've been so far over since the offseason, and they don't really regain it.

You can't trade retained salary. The only way to do it would be to re-acquire Kessel and then trade his entire salary somewhere else.

I'm going to agree with fake at this point. I don't think Robertson needs to be rushed into the NHL. I think they'll want to give at least one year in the AHL to get used the pace and size of the players. I think even if he impresses at camp next year, he'd still be sent down.

yup. for trades, the leafs essentially need to move out a dollar for every dollar they bring in; except if rielly is ready. i think the options are:

1) cut ~3 down to the marlies: gaudet, marincin and one of say sandin/engvall (re: waivers)

2) trade out a couple more million than you bring in

3) put someone else with a +2M caphit onto ltir.

if rielly is not ready:

leave rielly on ltir until the playoffs and then they have $4Mish to play with.

The ltir space doesn't carry forward.

What they can do is keep Rielly out until the playoffs, add a player equal to Riellys salary, then activate Rielly for the playoffs thus going over the cap. Like the hawks did with kane. But Rielly has to stay out till the playoffs.
