I hope it's the Habs.
Habs should give up the four first sign em for a year at 10 1/2. then just totally go for it. If leaf match great. If they don't, then do the 8 year deal. if they're so smart and they're good with everything else, that all first-round pics gonna be late in the 20s or if they win the Cup then the 31 or two or whatever it's gonna be with Seattle. |

The 1 year max contract the Leafs gave Snakes set the precedent. |

i hope it;s Columbus.
No true number 1 goalie.
I don't think marner will make a big deal of difference to that team .
That's Marner for 4 top 10 picks likely.

Hey Ek. Next time you talk to your source about this 1-year offer sheet, could you ask that source what they think of the following questions:
1) Is Marner willing to take the risk of injury here? Turn down like $10-11M x 7 to sign for 1 year, get hurt, and never make another dime? Seems risky for him.
2) Now what about the risk for the team. I give Marner a silly 1-year deal for like $15M. Then I hope to negotiate an 8-year extension. But now Marner has all the leverage in the world. Because if I can't extend him, well, I've just given away FOUR #1 picks for nothing and go down as the dumbest GM of all time. So I basically have to cave in and make him the highest paid player in the NHL. Something silly like $12.5M x 8 years for an even $100M, probably all bonuses and NMC, etc...So why not remove the risk of looking like the dumbest GM in the world and just overpay right now. You want $100M. Fine. Divide it by 7 instead of 8. Here's $14M x 7. Huge overpay. But at least I'm assured to have him in the fold.
So please ask your source that...what GM would give away 4 1sts and assume the risk that Marner doesn't agree to an extension? Maybe its something your source has never thought about and was just reading it on reddit?

A high ranking league executive just told me via alien telepathy that RFA Mitch Marner is scared of the Leafs signing PTOs Freddy Modin and Nik Antropov. This is forcing Marner to contemplate signing a 1 year offer sheet with the Habs who are looking to make a HUGE SPLASH! |

I thought Marner was looking for a 4-5 year deal? |
|
|
|
But... you know *if* Marner signs the 1 year "Mega" deal, then he has no real reason to sign the 8 year deal (at a reasonable price) in January (assuming the Leafs couldn't match) because since his qualifying price would be so high, he would have his new team over a barrel (both cost wise plus the fact that they just gave up 4 1sts)
And *if* his new team didn't re-qualify him at this "Mega" rate then he'd essentially be a UFA at 22
You act as if teams will throw this offer at Marner just to screw over the Leafs, without any thought at what it would do to them if the Leafs don't match the offer and take the picks |

The most realistic offer sheet Marner would get and possibly sign would be on for 4 years at 10.5 million
Marners Benefit
a) Because it gets him to UFA at 25 (Then he can get a huge payday)
b) Because the Leafs probably match and he gets to stay there
Offering Teams Benefit
a) It only costs 2 1sts a 2nd and a 3rd
b) They get him for a *reasonable* cap hit for 4 years and have an opportunity to give him 8 years when he's only 25-33 (His Prime)
c) It's 50/50 that the Leafs can actually match it (today) without gutting their team (Different story once the season starts and Hortons cap is off the books)
WHY WON'T HE SIGN ONE?????
In all reality, a deal has already been done, It will likely be signed after the season starts when the Leafs can put Horton on LTIR and open up the extra 5 million in capspace
The rest of this is all nonsense |

So Marner turns down 8 years at 11 per by the leafs, but would be willing to sign this contract next year? Makes sense. |

The Leafs can't pay Marner 11 million TODAY, They would have to make roster moves to fit under the cap with Horton's LTIR not eligible to be removed until after the season starts - They have to be cap compliant WITH Horton on the 1st day of the season
However, they can pay 11 after the 2nd day of the regular season once it is removed. That is what is going to happen - That is how the cap works
All this nonsense is just to get clicks and sell newspapers |
