At that point too, you'd be close enough to the cap that you could wait until there is an injury in the preseason or something to dangle Names out as trade bait. You'd basically make your cap problem almost vanish instantly.

Yup. I appreciate everything Staal has done as a Ranger. He was a warrior before the injuries, but its time for him to go.

Still not sure why they chose G over Staal. Was Staals buyout at the time that much worse?

They chose G because basically Sather did him a solid. There was really no reason to buy him out other than to help him out. It felt good, but as the last 2 seasons showed, it was a completely unnecessary move.

Now, I can move on

found it (if Rangers had bought out Marc Staal when they bought out Girardi)

Buying out Staal would leave the Rangers with savings and dead cap money of: (Cap Friendly)

17-18 | $2.13 million cap hit
18-19 | $2.13 million cap hit
19-20 | $3.13 million cap hit
20-21 | $3.93 million cap hit
21-22 | $1.43 million cap hit
22-23 | $1.43 million cap hit
23-24 | $1.43 million cap hit
24-25 | $1.43 million cap hit

basically it was just longer to go than Girardi's was

Girardi's cap hits end in 2023, Staal lasted until 2025

only reason they chose Girardi

Yeah. G could have played out his contract. Staal not so much. Still think it was the wrong choice but oh well

Was it the same year he broke his kneecap? That probably swayed them a little too

I remember that there were about 10%-15% who argued it should have been Staal.

Regardless, both of those guys reinforce the idea that NMC's almost almost come back to bite the team in the rear. I don't have any issues with the proposed numbers for Touba and Kreider, but they darn well better not have restrictive NMC's/NTC's in the last 3-4 years of their deal.

I'm sure there will be something. There always is. As long as it isn't extremely restrictive, I will be ok with it. Dodged a bullet on Stepans Contract, I think his was just about to go into effect which would have made him pretty much untradeable

Girardi is never done!

Seriously, I can't remember a guy who played through more stuff than he did. He literally always recovered, even after he did look completely broken down, as you say.

Exactly. I know there will be clauses, but they better be workable. Look at Subban, if he had a NMC he's still in Nashville.

yeah, but it's a 6 million dollar cap hit in 2020-21
- jimbro83

No one due for big raises next year except Kreider right? Fast/Nam will likely be gone, that’s 6 million, I’m sure by then one if not both Smith/Staal would be gone.
