Scout: "Brayden Point Should Get More Money than Mitch Marner." I talked to a HIGHLY respected Canadian NHL scout who said he was talking to people in Toronto and the feeling was Marner is off course crazy talented but Brayden Point is the best RFA player available and should be getting the top dollars...Some of you may have an opinion on this?

He will no doubt get a contract on that level. However, on paper it will be less than other teams because of Florida's taxes. his contract also has future implications that will have a factor... vasey signing next year will also come in play. tampa has to be smart about this.

Very correct.... problem is for Tampa, not so much Brayden Point. Same goes for Toronto and Marner. Moving Marleau was a miracle TBH. I didn't see it happening at all or as easily without any salary retention.

One of two things will happen :

Point will sign a bridge deal at 5.5 per.

or

Point will sign a long-term deal at $8 to $8.5 per.

tampa caught a couple miracles this week with Callahan's contract (very unfortunate for him) and then the return on the miller trade and his cap relief. they have the money to sign him, just a matter of time

Marner and Rantanen are both better than point, and should earn more. Maybe the Florida tax advantage rings in the AAV around equal

Eh. I don't really see much difference in their overall value. Different, but extremely talented, players.

My guess is Point signs a long deal... 8 years, 7.8m.

Point should sign for less as he plays in a no tax state. Marner has been built into being a superstar by the fans and Toronto media so he will demand and is worth Matthews money to Toronto. He could sign for $11 mil per plus offer sheet from a team that wants a young, dynamic player. RFA are getting way too much money.

Unless he has a full NMC I don't think taxes should be factored in because TB could trade him at anytime to a high tax location and then he is just SOL.

There's factors other than just taxes. Cost of living is also much less, aka can get a nicer house for less. Also the part where players tend to take a bit less in Tampa because they'd rather play here with the group they have than go fishing for a maybe/maybe not better situation elsewhere.

I would be shocked if he took a bridge deal. Then again, kucherov did the same.

I highly disagree with the premise of this blog. Marner is in Ontario and the state taxes in Florida is a factor you can’t ignore. It’s the only reason why kucherov and stamkos are not even getting 10m.

Therefore there’s no way point will be close to Marner in terms of cap hit

The bonus structure Toronto can offer should be used as an incentive to lower the AAV similar to Tampa's tax benefit but since Dubas gives it out like candy now it's expected. the fact that Matthews got the money term and bonus structure is what is going to (frank) up marners contract. I hope someone offer sheets him at this point and the leafs take the 4 1sts.

What? You don't think 11.5M a season for 8 years is a fair price for a small sized winger with 5 career playoff goals to his name??? You don't want to buy into paying a 22 year old just coming out of his entry deal as if he's 28 and fully proven himself? If Marner and his agent want to pretend that their demands aren't fully based on potential instead of career numbers then we all need to join in the fantasy... apparently. Somehow Marner and Ferris (his agent) are going to get a team other then the Leafs to pay him based on what Austin Matthews makes. Not sure why any of the 30 other teams would buy into that. If the Leafs pay Marner above 10.1M per then they deserve to to lose.

If Carolina offer sheets Marner at the 4 first round pick compensation level we'll know why they traded for Marleau and recouped a first round pick in the process.
