Real disappointing game for the US today, Hughes was arguably the best and most noticeable(in a good way) player on the ice. Which honestly doesn't bode well for the team in this tournament. If a 17 year old is your best player, with the names on this roster, then something is clearly wrong. A lot of guys were lazy and playing like they dont care, too many turnovers, horrible passing, terrible dzone coverage. Just awful. Hughes looked pretty good though, seemed to be creating something every shift. Could've easily had a goal(off the post from a sharp angle) and multiple assists(if JVR buried them into empty nets).
Studenic was very good for Slovakia as well today! |

it wasn't even that great. he got a step on the defender and was basically in alone on the goalie. good goal, but wasn't AMAZING. - MartysBetter88

USA looked pretty awful all game. Not the most encouraging stuff from Schneider...I hope he shows more in this tournament to make me feel like he's returning to vintage Schneider form but I'm not convinced he wont be a $6,000,000 backup by Thanksgiving.
Hughes looked pretty good to my eye. Definitely wish he got more ice time. He's absolutely electric on the rush and in general with the puck on his stick. Seems like nothing special when the puck's not on his stick but didn't strike me as a liability at all or anything like that.
Watched most of both the Finland and USA games today, I'd say Kakko was more impressive today but it's obviously just one game each. |

Hughes needs way more ice time. He was objectively one of the best US skaters today. |

We need some more talent, full stop. The elite free agents are not coming here, full stop. Why pay for overage talent that won't age well (looking at you Eberle)? There are some RFA Ray could offer sheet (no not Marner) that would cost a reasonable price, not ransom the future and the ages would match our time horizon. If any of these guys are not signed by 7/1 I hope Ray goes for it:

Nobody offer sheets anyone. This isn’t going to happen.
Free agents get overpaid but they don’t cost you assets like picks or prospects and most are pretty good trade assets once they are under contract. So Free Agency is just another resource a team can use. There are good signings and bad ones.
Also this BS that the Devils can’t sign top guys isn’t true. Clearly there is usually plenty of competition for top talent and NJ isn’t the sexiest destination but it’s happened. We signed Mike Cammalleri when he was a top FA and Lou was also in on Paul Stasny.
Obviously the trade route is another option for Ray Ray and we can be optimistic about having a lot of picks and cap space. |

Ray has put together some great trades. I think he will do something impressive yet again. Lots and lots of willing ears after the playoffs performances and cap situations teams are in. Lets swing for the stars here and get somone like Patrick Kane. Could you imagine a Hall-Hughes-Kane line? Never happen but it would be something to behold.
