I can see Butcher easily getting a Severson contract. 4 mil for 5 to 6 years. He accomplished more then Severson ever did when Severson got that contract. |

Well, he played way softer minutes and a lot of his points were PP inflated from playing with Hall, Palmieri, etc. every night. |

Todd are you going to continue with you're potential draft looks as we get closer to the actuall draft. i.e Non first round picks, especially with us having three 2nds and two thirds. |

Maybe last year though you can't fault him for excelling in that role. This year was a down year for him and he still hit 30 points and held his own better than most of the other defenders. |

Byram just came off an impressive season and upped his game in the playoffs (23 points in 19 games!). He could make it a tough choice for you at 2. |

I tend to agree with Todd on this one, need to see him more and in an expanded role before you commit to a 5-6 year contract, of course if he excels in an expanded role it becomes more expensive to sign him later, but at least Greene will be off the books by then. |

Yeah I mean I'm not going to be upset obviously if he signs a bridge deal but I can see him and his agent arguing for more. And like you said Green will be off the books so it'll make it easier to give him Green's contact essentially or better. |

it wasn't even that great. he got a step on the defender and was basically in alone on the goalie. good goal, but wasn't AMAZING. |

The best part of the goal was fighting off the D and keeping his balance. |

I don’t think I’ve seen Severson hit anyone like that since Marchand. Wish he did it more. |

Great read Todd. I also see Butch getting far more than 2 years at 2.2M per however. What is the average 4/5 D getting paid these days. Seems to be in the 4M range, and at 24 years of age, Butch should be in his prime years on this next contract. Personally, I would be happy with 5 years, at 3.85M per. It would solidify a competent second LD for the best years of his career. I would hope for the same with Zacha as well. Tho I have regularly stated the guy is a "bust", I only mean that in terms of his top 6 talent. I could see him being the future of a quality 3rd line forward and would love to have more term on his extension.
Anyway, not gonna nickle and dime this contracts. Your projections have us spending only 11.23M on 9 ufa/rfa's, adding Hughes .925M, takes us to 12.15M. So, that brings our current roster too 66.41M, having 15 forwards, 8 D, 2 goalies....
Not to mention cheap contracts like Smith, Davies, and Walsh which have yet to shed a year of their entry level.
Now...... 82M projected cap space leaves us with 15.6M. I will look at Hall's extension being somthing around 11M, which is exactly the cap difference we will shed on Greene's retirement after next season. So all we have to worry about is saving for Nico's extension. Very little to worry about.
Why not target some short term overpayments this UFA season?

Because it would be a poor use of cap space. I'd rather overpay for 1 big UFA than spend 17mil for 2-3 years on 3 average players. We already have average players. |
