I doubt Marner would sign the offer sheet if it came from Ottawa.

Heard someone saying he might be expendable this summer with guys like Pelech, Pulock, Mayfield and Toews playing so well.

I doubt the owner of Ottawa would ever agree to spend that kind of cash.

Strome confirmed to play for Canada in World Championships. I believe this is the list so far:

USA: Kane, DeBrincat
Canada: Strome
Russia: Anisimov
Finland: Jokiharju, Lankinen
Sweden: Gustafsson, Kruger
Swiss: Kurashev
Germany: Kahun

Second City Hockey has a bunch of video highlights of several draft prospects from the U18 World Championships. Videos are of:

Caufield
Turcotte
Zegras
Krebs
Podkolzin

Plus one of a play involving Cozens and Newhook against Knight.

I thought about that too...I think they can test the market and if it doesn't fit team or money bags or combination thereof for them, who knows, they might decide.

Wiz with the draft being so deep, don't you think trading
Gus for a mid 1st round choice could go a long ways in
solidifying the future

I'm thinking maybe a trade in this area in this area

He's an elite defensive defenseman. Basically Vlasic all over again but with better offense.

I am preferring Turcotte or Krebs over Cozens at this point. While Cozens plays a heavier game, Turcotte and Krebs both play a better all-around game and give their all every shift and in every zone. It was mentioned before that Cozens may be more Kesler like while Turcotte is more Toews like. Give me the latter.

Not sure what a Krebs comparable is. Maybe a poor mans Bergeron? I'd be happy with a Danault type player.

Newhook would be a good choice if the Hawks are able to make a trade to gain another 1st rounder in the teens. His scouting report reads like a higher-end Sikura: small stature but willing to engage physically all over the ice, great vision and hockey sense, and strong defensively.

Zegras is worth a look as well with a mid/late teens pick. Similar game as Newhook. I read a scouting report (I think on Sportsnet.ca) that likened his passing and playmaking as Kane-esque. Even if he'll never be that good, it's a good indication of where those skills are at and what his potential is.

Possibly Boldy if that additional pick is in the early teens but he could also go in the 7-10 range.

I would agree with all of this as well. I watched the US play 5 times, Canada 4 times and Russia twice.

USA

Hughes is the quickest player on the ice and has great offensive hockey IQ and skills. If he somehow falls to 3 be ecstatic.

Turcotte plays hard every shift, has good skill, speed, plays PP as net front presence, PK, and plays a 200 foot game. I see him at worst as a 2C.

Caufield is seriously the Cat 2.0. Has the uncanny ability to be in the right spot and has a lethal shot. Faster than ADB but right now doesn't seem as feisty.

Zegras is smooth and has that Hockey IQ and vision that you can't teach. May end up more as a winger in the pros. (He played winger for team USA, so I never saw him take a draw). Seems very skilled and I believe will surprise a lot of people. I could see him being a Stan/Kelly pick. Great vision and high IQ.

Boldy is just all around solid. Good vision, PP, PK, good passer.

Canada

Cozens. I hate to say it but I see more Perlini in him than I do like a Scheifele. He is big and fast and can make great plays but then just coasts for 4/5 of the game and is invisible. Does go to the dirty area and played some PK. If you can coach the desire into a player then he could be great. I just think that is a risk.

Krebs brings it every shift. smart, good vision, PK, hustles. The annoucers compared him to Ryan O'Reily.

2nd Rounder Jamison Rees. Goes all out every shift, PK, hits, agitates and has some skill.

Russia

Podkolsin- I didn't see any great things about his game. He plays hard but didn't see great skill or speed. He is stronger than a lot of the kids he played against but don't see it in the pros. Pass

I concur with that idea of trading Gustafsson for another 1st rounder, likely in the mid/late teens or early 20's. Could possibly garner another asset as well. Brouwer got a 1st rounder alone and Hartman got a 1st rounder (Beaudin), 4th rounder (Kurashev), and Ejdsell.

Thank you for the observations. I appreciate the extensive notes you shared.

And good call on Rees for the 2nd round. He's a guy I was liking as well. Beecher, too. Seems like a higher-end Hayden.

Thinking about the prospect of trading Gustafsson for a 1st rounder - if I were the team giving up a 1st rounder - I would want more then 1 year of Gustafsson. Maybe something like the Hawks' 2nd rounder plus Gustafsson for a mid 1st rounder.

I've seen Dach play only twice and one of those games I missed the 1st half of the game - so very limited viewing - but, I didn't see speed anywhere near what Saad has. I saw great vision and passing but he wasn't quick/fast and he didn't get engaged physically. Maybe I caught him on a couple bad days but I was not impressed. One of the games I saw was when Dach's team played Brett Leason's team and I know Leason is an over-ager but it looked like Leason could skate circles around Dach.
