hahah well, I dont think it was stupid, thought it was impressive actually. Having said that, you seem like the type that wouldn't want a lot of years of mediocrity to just make the playoffs to only lose first round and would rather it all torn down and reset in order to build champion caliber teams. I understand that side of it too.
- MattStrat

Yeah it was just the final few years were at the cost of the future and they were in no way shape or form contenders.

The Pens cant count on it because they have done a terrible job of getting their young guys in the lineup. Pouliot, Sprong, now Blueger all with great potential but get screwed around. Then consider a guy like Prow who is buried behind a backlog.

The Bruins and Preds just do a better job of giving their young guys a chance.

Not here to stir poop, but this is the best line I have ever heard and I'm stealing it. Thanks!

No, the Pens have just drafted poorly for a while.

I don’t know about that. For a team that’s finished so high in the standings for so long, the fact they’ve drafted/developed guys like Guentzel, Rust, Sheary, Simon and Murray proves there’s something to their scouting.

EDIT:
When you factor in they’ve traded away so many picks, their ratio for drafting vs. developing nhl players has to be pretty good.

Simon is the only GMJR draft pick on the roster (unless you count Dumo who was drafted by GMJR for CAR).

Regardless, the Pens as an org have drafted fairly well for finishing so high and with limited selections.

We really won’t know the fruit of JR’s selections specifically until the coming years.

I was just pointing out that in the last 4 years under GMJR I don’t believe the Pens have drafted great, with Simon being the only one worth a damn.

Ah gotcha. I didn’t really look back. I thought Bingo was making a generalization as a whole, not specifically JR.

That being said I’m curious to see how Addison, Bjorqivst and Hallander pan out.

Just a quick PSA to anyone that's interested: DK's having a flash sale for $10 year subscriptions today that ends at midnight. I'm personally out on DK, but that may be worth it for other people.

I don’t really have high expectations for any of the 3 to be honest.

Probably curious about Addison the most as he’s a ppg in the W.

Don't people seem to be high on Hallander?

Bjorqvist seemed interesting when we drafted him but doesn't seem to be tracking any better than Nikita Pavlychev at this point in time.

Eh... I'll be fair and count half of Dumo...drafted by JR, developed by Pens

Per Mackey both Dumo and Letang are progressing. Dumo skated yesterday. That's a good sign for a concussed dude. He's at least well enough to have light work outs and see how his brain reacts.

EDIT: Sorry that was per Jesse Marshall, not Mackey.

I did a 3 year deal... almost exactly 3 years ago for like, 40 bucks. I won't be renewing.

Yeah word was that Hallander was a good pick but I don’t really see much in terms of production from him. At least Addison is getting like 40-50 apples from the backend.

OH.. so you are simply speculating that he doesn't understand the CBA. Its possible he just tried to see if he could pull a fast one on the NHL? Or maybe it was simple mistake and since that doesn't come up very often just a small blunder on his part. Lets also not forget that there was another team involved who didn't know or realize this also.

And good job being objective when talking about his trade for a player that hasn't even suited up a game for the Guins. Gudbranson could be a good fit here and improve month after month like...oh idk... that other guy you love to bash.... whats his name??? Oh yea.. Jack Johnson.

Ryan it really is time you hand over the keys to the Penguins blog on this site. Your obsession with Advance stats and lack of any real understanding of the game makes you create conclusions about things you don;t like about the team.

The past two years has been nothing but hate from you in regards to the Pens. It is so tiresome.

- Penguinnutt

I like your perspective, however perhaps you should find another Penguin news outlet(where every blog isn't a huge whine, poor me fest)....I know I did. I imagine a bunch of old ladies in their 80s/90s that sit around and complain about everything when I read RW's articles and comments.

It is actually funny reading all the comments on this guy sucks, that guy sucks....all while the keyboard warriors are in their mom/dads basement living out their dreams of being miserable. Comedy at its finest!

Yeah that's what ended it for me. Yohe and Mackey have warts but after they left the quality of the beat plummeted. I stuck with DK for a little while afterwards but once that Meat Grinder story came out I decided to pack it in and not give my money to a garbage human who's product I didn't even like anymore. All the good Sixers beat guys, Yohe, and Jesse Marshall going to The Athletic made my decision very easy.

If I could just get Taylor's articles from his site, I'd be good... they do the advanced stats weekly

Also... what Civian story thing?

As much as hate deadspin and their lack of journalistic integrity, this really should be required reading for anyone that's considering subscribing to DK:

https://deadspin.com/pitt...a-meat-grinder-1821797940

Yohe basically corroborated the sentiment on twitter with in so many words when the story broke. Forgot exactly what he said but it was some underhanded remark about how if he weren't so professional he'd have a lot of stories to share that day with the Kermit drinking tea meme.
