OH.. so you are simply speculating that he doesn't understand the CBA. Its possible he just tried to see if he could pull a fast one on the NHL? Or maybe it was simple mistake and since that doesn't come up very often just a small blunder on his part. Lets also not forget that there was another team involved who didn't know or realize this also.
And good job being objective when talking about his trade for a player that hasn't even suited up a game for the Guins. Gudbranson could be a good fit here and improve month after month like...oh idk... that other guy you love to bash.... whats his name??? Oh yea.. Jack Johnson.
Ryan it really is time you hand over the keys to the Penguins blog on this site. Your obsession with Advance stats and lack of any real understanding of the game makes you create conclusions about things you don;t like about the team.
The past two years has been nothing but hate from you in regards to the Pens. It is so tiresome. - Penguinnutt
Why are you still here? You're just (frank)ing delusional about anything related to hockey. |

Ironically all it takes is the eye test to see how much Gudbranson and JJ suck. |

Thats not true.....and RW loves the Penguins and because he strongly disagrees with some of the directions the management took and decisions coaches have made, IMO quite a few times rightfully so, there's emotion attached to what he's writing.
Relax. Its a f'n hockey blog on a hockey rumor site. geeeze. |

Yeah Johnson is a real case study in people defending bad players just to #OwnTheNerds. It really doesn't take stats to see Johnson sucks. You can see his gaffes on a shift by shift basis. Even Grinder doesn't defend the guy. Gudbranson will likely be the same. |

Gudbranson will be so bad it'll make some people forget how bad Johnson is. Thus people will stop taking shots at JR's unofficially adopted grandson, Jack Johnson. |

One guy on the flyers page (flyers fan) was staying how JJ was actually good and he allowed other players to "be better and play their roles" and that people were just getting caught up in the media bashing
It was one of the hotter takes I've seen in a while |

There is zero media bashing, though. The Pittsburgh beat guys stan the poop out of him. The criticism really only comes from the fanbase. |

Well if the media and management believe it, it must be true right!
The crazy part about JR is the two cups will probably be enough to keep him through the rest of the Crosby and Malkin era and then the team is gonna be absolute poop after that because of his moves but he will get no blame and only praise and his successor will have to deal with the mess
So basically holmgren/Hextall situation but with actual cups to show for it |

hahah well, I dont think it was stupid, thought it was impressive actually. Having said that, you seem like the type that wouldn't want a lot of years of mediocrity to just make the playoffs to only lose first round and would rather it all torn down and reset in order to build champion caliber teams. I understand that side of it too.

To be fair, I fully expect us to suck hard for at least half a decade after the Crosby/Malkin Era. I think sucking hard is the best way to rebuild and half measures that keep teams semi-competitive but still not good can set a franchise in transition to its next era back like what happened with the Sixers.
So maybe JR loading us up with stupid contracts could work in our favor when it comes to a post-Crosby/Malkin retirement rebuild. |

I'm in that camp too. I detest sustained mediocrity and need hope of a brighter future if things aren't currently good to be fully invested. There is a higher likelihood that I would watch ever game if my team is 31st in the league than if its on the fringe of the 2nd wild card year after year with no real prospects of improvement. |

This is why I wanted them to strip it down a bit this year. If you miss the playoffs you at least get a lottery pick. If you make it, you get some playoff experience for the young guys you bring up and have cap space available for FAs in the off-season.
Instead we have a roster that likely isnt good enough to do much damage in the playoffs and an inflated payroll for at least another year. |

That's true, but both teams kind of got unexpected influxes of star talent. We got that with Guentzel, and I guess it could happen again, but that's usually not something you should count on. |

I hear you and agree. Having said that, most teams middling in mediocrity dont make the payoffs like 25 straight years though, so that streak is impressive from that standpoint.
As Pens fans we're headed there in the next few years, arguably flirting with it now....and I think I'd really like a different GM to helm a rebuild. |

Definitely. Luckily Rutherford is like super old and probably will retire when the Cup window officially closes. So I'm not scared that The Old Man will F up our rebuild. I'm worried that Bill Guerin is the next man up and that he won't be good. |

The Pens cant count on it because they have done a terrible job of getting their young guys in the lineup. Pouliot, Sprong, now Blueger all with great potential but get screwed around. Then consider a guy like Prow who is buried behind a backlog.
The Bruins and Preds just do a better job of giving their young guys a chance. |
