Looks like Carolina has taken the Rangers off their search list for forward production help as far as any possible deal for Zucc. as rumored in mid January. Toronto has been scouting Carolina in search for another d'man, in having a match for them with their own depth up front. However, they first must, and are continuing their efforts to find a taker for one of their two highest salaried, pending UFA d'men as a rental off their roster, with Gardiner being their preferred option, or Hainsey as option two (35+ Mod. NTC, and $1.05M lower AAV than Gardiner's $4.05M), since both are not likely to be offered new contracts by them.
In addition to Carolina as a possible trade partner, the Leafs as an alternate option, may try again to get the Blues to reduce their earlier demands in trade talks to acquire Pietrangelo. But having just made the deal this week to acquire their first d'man target they wanted in Muzzin (& his $4M for one more season), in addition to having to part with either Gardiner's or Hainsey's remaining contracts for this season, they would also have to move Zaitsev and his annual $4.5M contract which still has 3 years remaining. |

I am guilty of being an arse once in a while, but DumDum just keeps saying these things that will never/ should happen. No way to win, if only answer is trading away picks/prospects for UFAs. It did not work without a cap, so how the hell will it work in the cap era!!!? Gotta build from within, then add with FAs |

So what this really comes down to is either you're team Dundee or Team Me. Pick your sides.

If you think I'm insane by wanting the Rangers to build though the draft, then I can't help you. Calgary has built moslty through the draft, with some trades. Winnipeg, Toronto, Tampa etc. Worked for team before them and now some of them are on the down turn.
Where it hasn't worked is Buffalo, Edmonton and Florida. But I'm willing to risk that. |

I really dont understand why Florida isn't better than they are
but I dont think it's just a coincidence that every team Keith Yandle has ever been on underachieves |

All of the multiple cup winners and the Caps have mixed building through the draft and being aggressive in trades/free agency. The draft is really important, but you have to be able to do both to win. I'd argue Philly is an example of a team that for the most part tried to stay pat for awhile, and while their prospects are impressive, they don't seem particularly close to winning it all. |

Caps, very much built there core through the draft, made one of the worst trades ever and still won. That is what builiding through the draft can do for you. |

One of these days your going to need help and randomly someone like Cody McCloud or Yandle are going to be there and they are not going to save you. That is how you will go |

Ehhhh, according to Travis Yost the market on Kreider would be VERY high should the Rangers decide to trade him this deadline. |

There is a difference between wanting to build through the draft and not being able to settle for anything other than 1st overall to the point where you are cheering AGAINST the current roster.
This is the stop where most of us are getting off your train. |

Mcleod would needlessly fight the guy next to me and Yandle would miss the opportunity. |

As they say on radio "long time listener first time caller". I know this will probably get shut down, but what would you guys think of a creative trade for Panarin? I'm not sure about what the rules are for sign and trades, but I wonder what would have to be added if we agreed to send them back Hayes. There is a value of having an asset available to resign. Don't forget they can sign for an extra year, plus you get the window of exclusive negotiation. Hayes seems like a guy that Torts possible could like, although fair counterpoint is we don't know if Hayes would want to resign with them. - 2sticks1puck
No they can't. Has to be on the roster on or before January 1st to get the extra year |

I'll settle for a top 5 pick this year. That is as far as I'm willing to move. |

True...Philly tried to build from w/in but failed at evaluating their talent. It will work if the "correct" players are drafted, and the players develop like management thinks they will. |
