Let me offer probably the most hated proposal

Rangers send Hayes and Shattenkirk to Tampa Bay for Callahan, this year's 1st or 2nd (depending on cup win so basically NY gets both picks regardless), and Tampa Bay's next 2 1st round picks with a conditional 3rd round pick if Tampa wins a Cup.

Yzerman already has 1 foot out the door. His legacy is winning a Cup now before he goes back to Detroit. He has no incentive for future picks. Offering him possibly the best C on the market who knows half of his roster quite well as a rental and converting Callahan and his albatross contract into a serviceable defenseman who can potentially dominate with easier matchups makes his team a juggernaut.

For NY Gorton immediately receives death threats over Callahan coming back but NY is free from him after next season. Callahan is garbage but he will play David Quinn style hockey. Rangers are guaranteed an extra 1st round pick for 3 more years even if they are really late round picks in addition to a 2nd and potentially a 3rd round pick. 5 extra early round picks is a lot of capital for a rebuild or even offer sheet. Hayes has a chance to win a cup with friends on a team that has 0 chance of resigning him giving NY a chance to bring him back

Yzerman has both feet and hands out the door. He isn't the GM. BriseBois is.

seems like a decent prospect to take with our late first rounder or our early second rounder

Exactly. Why would you listen to lesser Matt...

He's still there though right. Like he's a special advisor or some stupid poop.

No he's home in Detroit, as far as I understand. McKenzie said on the radio today that he's most likely waiting for his contract with Tampa to expire on July 1 and then he's taking the Wings job.

McKenna then wondered about the possibility of bringing in Steve Yzerman, at any cost, in the Shanahan role.

“Yeah, see - the Yzerman thing, my take on this,” inserted McKenzie. “And again, I’m definitely not reporting this, so I’m not getting radioed on this. I said this on my podcast before. I’d be the most shocked guy in the world if Yzerman doesn’t end up with the Detroit Red Wings as soon as his contract is done with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and I believe it’s up on July 1.

“So I don’t have specific knowledge of that happening. Sometimes the most obvious thing in the world is the thing that will happen. I kind of feel that way as an opinion-based thing, that Yzerman is going to end up back in Detroit.

“And on top of everything, Yzerman left his job at arguably the best team in the National Hockey League, one of the best franchises in the National Hockey League, because he wanted to be closer to home, family considerations. With a team in Tampa, a farm team in Syracuse, a home in Detroit, an offseason home in Ontario, Muskoka - it was a little too much running around and splitting things with his family and what have you.

You may be right, idk. I know that at point he was still there, not as GM obviously.

"On September 11, 2018, with one year remaining in his contract Yzerman announced he would be stepping down as the Lightning general manager, but will remain with the team as advisor to the owner and governor, Jeffrey Vinik. Yzerman was succeeded by assistant general manager Julien BriseBois."

Yeah I read that as "remain with the team" as in he'll still be employed by them as a special advisor. I can't imagine he wanted to be closer to his family by staying in Florida.

Anyway, it's not really important.

I was honestly curious about what you thought about my trade proposal last night. I figured it'd ruffle a few feathers but all I got was crickets.

The deal was actually fair. But where does Niku play? You figure without a couple of moves that the Rangers blue line next year looks like...

Skjei-Shattenkirk
Staal-Pionk
Lindgren-DeAngelo
Smith

Niku is a good player, but the fact he shoots left handed is an issue. Given that the Rangers love drafting LHS d-men.

Lindgren has 9 points in 46gp (.20ppg) in the AHL, spread across two seasons. Niku has 64pts in 93gp spread across two seasons (.69ppg). I'm sure someone will think I'm crapping on Lindgren because I'm an Islander fan and I just want to hate the Rangers prospects, but I really don't think Lindgren will ever be a full-time NHL'er. Purely my opinion, but I think he tops out as a bottom-pairing guy at best.

I think people get wrapped up in handedness too often. Get the good young defenseman and worry about the rest later. Who knows if WPG would offer that (I imagine they see him as a Trouba replacement when he is a cap casualty this summer), but if they did then I think that'd be the best offer the Rangers would get for Hayes by a mile.

Kevin Hayes to DAL

Roope Hintz and Ty Dellandrea to NYR

Outside the normal COL/CGY ideas DAL needs help up front. They only have 3 players with double digit goals (Benn/Seguin/Radulov) and then there’s a huge drop off. Hayes can step into the 2C role and balance out the scoring a bit helping DAL reach the playoffs.

Dellandrea is a right handed shot center that adds to the depth at center and Hintz is a big foward at 6’3 215 that can help with our lack thereof depth on the wing. Hintz should be NHL ready by camp next year and since being sent down has 19 points in 18 games.
