there is a common theme with all of these free agents who signed multi year contracts. |

Maybe that they're always a terrible no good idea unless you're "one piece" away and are able to correctly identify that "one piece"
if only some people have been saying this for years. |

This place, two summers ago.
"Alzner would be a great signing. Steady defensive presence. Lockdown/shutdown type D. Can fight. Could give him more offensive opportunity than Washington. Put Edler on waivers to make space." |

why does that "one piece" have to be a multi year deal? And name one ufa who hit a multi year deal that has actually proven to be remotely close to being worth it.
Eriksson, Backes, Brouwer, Alzner, John Moore, Kevin Shattenkirk, Belesky, Kevan Smith, Lucic, Jack Johnson, Gagner, Kulikov
being "one piece" away to me leans more towards signing a 1 or 2 year max serviceable contract. I honestly hope the Canucks NEVER sign a free agent for more than 2 years ever again. |

there is too many lol
it's weird. The two most productive UFA forwards under Benning's tenure as GM were signed to 1 and 2 year deals (Vanek and Vrbata). Also weird that CBJ got the most productive version of gagner on a 1 year, 600k league minimum "show me" deal, and we get AHL calibre Gagner on a 3 year? Super strange |

Kane. Radulov. Tavares.
If you want to go further back you can look at guys like Hamhuis or Chara.
Lots of players have done fine and aren't hurting their teams. Okposo, Stastny, Suter, JVR, Marleau, etc.
Kovalchuk was looking great until Willie became coach and decided that he was a 4th liner despite leading the team in scoring.
There are lots of good UFA deals. Its just that everything thinks they're signing the "good one" and usually they aren't. And quite often there were tons of red flags pointing to a poor decision ignored along the way. |

I think Gagner has been fine.
3 mil is a bit expensive, but the Canucks have this habit of getting a player who found success somewhere playing a particular role and then deciding to never use them that way again.
It isn't easy to find someone who can pretend to be a top6 forward while you're rebuilding and he's always been a good PP player when used as the halfwall QB or bumper player. Not his fault Newell Brown looked at his RH shot and went "OVECHKIN!!!!!!!" |

Hossa yep. There are more but I don't want to go team by team player by player year by year.
Seriously though, (frank)ing Willie with Kovalchuk. The guy had 13 points in 15 games. Willie becomes coach, almost immediately demotes him to the 4th line, gives him basically no PP time and now has 1 point in 8 games or whatever it is since WD is coach.
There is no one better at self sabotaging his roster than Willie. |

you citing Tavares is technically the same, as he went to UFA, but the difference between him and the rest of the schmucks, is that they were purposively not signed. Kane never went to UFA. Radulov the same as Tavares (MTL actively tried to sign him but he chose DAL for more money/tax reasons).
Kovalchuk is a bum and should be lumped into the category with the other bums.
JVR has 4 points this season..
Marleau has been decent good, but he also plays with some pretty fantastic wingers.
Okposo has been healthy scratched
Suter is 33, signed until he is 39/40. at 7.5 mill.
Zach Parise is 34, signed until he is 40/41, at 7.5
Not here to ratio you here, but if you are leaning heavily on JVR/Radulov/Tavares as your main counterpoints to how signing UFAs to longer term contracts is beneficial, well, you do you man lol
