He wasn't a successful junior coach, though. He was a pretty average AHL coach that got a bunch of attention for coaching a veteran-heavy AHL team deep into the playoffs. He was regarded by some in the media as the next big thing in coaching but any objective assessment of his coaching in the AHL would show that he leaned on veterans (Hamilton, Zigomanis, Kostka, Aucoin, etc). However, he did have a reputation of coaching some young guys well, but NONE of that translated to the Oilers.

No, it couldn't be. That's WAY over the cap and a lot of things would've been different had Hall been retained. We've discussed this ad nauseum before; getting into it does no one any good.

I remember Paul Maurice getting heckled for years for playing ALL his young guys and having a loosing record. Chevy still has faith in him and extended him for 3 years. Started the next year 0-5-1, I thought Maurice was going to get fired by game 10, butt they took off like gang busters after then and look where they are now..

TMac playing that one kid 3:25 is just ridiculous.

Who do you guys (and gals for Jero) want to be your next head coach? New blood or Old?..

Newer coach without a doubt....this is a young team and needs a coach that fits the current roster....Todd is more of a veteran team coach where he doesn’t have to deal with as many younger guys

Good thought on Maurice. Kinda gives perspective to a degree of patience that's needed when developing a young team.

Manny Viveiros seems like he had a lot of hype coming in so I've gotta think that management believes in him so maybe he makes sense. I'm not at all confident that he's the answer, but if it gets us away from Todd and into a guy better equipped to tackle the modern NHL both in systems and actual personability, then I'll take it. My thing isn't "bring in the best coach" because I don't think there's an objective measure that one can use to quantify the quality of a coach. You can infer based on a number of factors, but it's an inexact process.

That's why I just want any different coach that has a track record of developing and allowing young players to play. Todd Nelson comes to mind because he's the last guy I saw do that in Edmonton. Someone the players will trust and go to war for so we can get the best out of the players we have- Puljujarvi in particular.

Personally I would like to get away from a “name” coach and go in a different direction....you see it with younger teams now where the gm brings in a successful junior coach....to Max’s point we might even have that guy as one of our assistants already in Viveiros....what would it hurt to try at this point it’s not like we are a cup contender
