Leafs aren't going to budge. They can afford to have him sit out and give Ennis and kapanen a shot with Matthews. This contract sets the tone for Marner and Matthews negotiations. He'll end up signing a bridge or a long term for what the leafs want.

Pastrnak and Nylander career ppg we’re pretty much identical before signing their first contracts, and the caps gone up. Anything under 7 will be good really. I think all this talk of him wanting 8 plus is just part of the negatiations nothing more. Read an article yesterday that showed that players that hold out into training camp usually get underpaid as well. Dubas will want to get this as low as possible because it can sorta be used as a stepping stone for Marner.
- ClarksonDavid

You're right of course in terms of cap going up, and I am sure the Leafs are determined to keep the number under $7. This might be a bridge deal scenario, with Matthews and Marner looking for deals soon. Dubas will have to convince all three to take less than top dollar. Doing things a little more like the Bruins and Tampa, rather than like the Oilers and Habs.

Don’t care about Nylander. It’s good to identify selfish players and move them out. Move him to Edmonton or Carolina, maybe he’ll be happier there. If they don’t want him, let him sit and let’s talk more about what’s going on with the players that did show up!

There's a good chance the leafs are low balling him knowing that he has no leverage in the situation and they can afford to have him sit out for a while.

I hope Nash signs a 1 year deal to play in Toronto. I cannot wait to get this season started!

There’s just as good a chance that leafs are low balling him as there is he’s asking for a crazy amount. it’s too bad fans take it personal for some reason..

Trying to get a good contract does not make him a selfish player. You should harken back to Doughty. I guess the kings should have gotten rid of him for holding out.

Not the same situation, Doughty - UFA and was a significant piece in two cup wins. He would have received that money from several teams. Kings would have received nothing if he signed elsewhere. Nylander is not free to sign elsewhere, if a team is stupid enough to sign him to an offer sheet, if its more than 8.2 million (Leafs get 2 firsts, a second and a third) if its between 6 and 8.1 million (Leafs get a first a second and a third) Leafs will match the latter type deal - unless it is a high lottery pick. He gets bridged unless he signs a reasonable deal - likely less than $7 million.

If he's healthy, that'd be a good depth acquisition. Rather see him beside Tavares than Hyman, that's for sure. That's the type of signing that saves you draft picks at the deadline when everybody else is overpaying for players.

I think the Leafs only named three alternate captains but I think they could have gone with four; two for home games, two for road games.

Tavares and Kadri for home games.

Rielly and Marleau for road games.

Or alternatively, six alternate captains, three for home, three for the road.

Tavares, Kadri and Rielly for home games.

Marleau, Matthews and Marner for road games.

Let the players vote for a captain at the end of the season.

Doughty held out after his ELC. So he wasn’t a UFA, and the Kings hadn’t won a Cup yet.

Not sure I would want Nash. He hasn't exactly been anywhere near how he used to be. Ennis is looking at a bottom 4 role, and while yeah Nash has more skill and would likely be more in line with an upper line player, he hasn't exactly been all that good in that role the past few years. He's been bouncing around for a reason. Rather spend the money on someone who comes in and can contribute and possibly is a younger guy that will fit in better with the core. We have the aging vet roles covered well enough.
- Roadrunner75

purely a stop gap... if he's willing to go cheap for a chance at a playoff run... I'd rather Nash over Ennis any day.

And he was a number 2 overall selection, a top pairing d-man and got $7mil long-term. Yeah he got a good deal. Relatively speaking, had higher value to LA than Nylander has to Leafs IMO.

For example, what happens next if Nylander digs his heels in and announces that he will retire first. How long after that could the leafs retain his rights?

I believe a drafted player who signs an ELC surrenders negotiating rights to that team for seven pro seasons accrued, or until the player turns 27. Whichever comes first.

Dubas referenced other Leaf players like Morgan Rielly, who took less on contract extensions to make it possible for the team to keep the current group together. Nazem Kadri and John Tavares continued that trend on their deals and the Leafs GM is hoping that Nylander, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and Jake Gardiner will follow suit.

Not that I dont think the Leafs are going to be really good this year, but didnt Tavares sign the biggest UFA deal, like ever, under the current CBA? That is kind of setting the market.

He still took $3 million less than what was offered to him by other teams.
