Benning will be gone after they don't make the playoffs next season. I'm hoping it will be after not making the playoffs this season. - Marwood
Without Linden to shelter him from FA and a new president coming in it could be a lot sooner. |

I'm not advocating that Benning is some sort of genius or that he's doing/has done a good job. I just think that he's managed to assemble some good young talent in spite of himself. - golfingsince
True. I wouldn't want that on my resume, though. |

Weren't people here super high on Tanev a couple years back. Claiming his starts showed he was an elite shut down guy or defensive star.
That was the time toto trade him, after the world championships. - kaptaan
They should have moved him years ago but his value is not high now. Same as every other value we had like Edler Luongo the Twins Burrows . We always hang on too bloody long |

There are a lot of ifs, which holds true for any team looking to transition from the cellar. We do have a pile of young players marinading in the minors/chl/college of which a couple will certainly join the big club over the next couple of seasons and provide something we aren't necessarily counting on.
In the end it doesn't really take as much as one might think to elevate a team from the basement. We went from having some of the best goaltending in the league to among the worst over the past 5 seasons, which in itself is certainly good for a substantial climb in the standings. - golfingsince
It's not unique to the Canucks though, all the bottom teams are getting better through drafting and developing and most of the good teams, unless they draft lightsout, are declining.
The Canucks will get better through their drafting, how could they not, it's just gonna take time to let kids like Lind, Gadjovich, Dahlen, Juolevi, Demko, Pettersson, Hughes, etc. etc. soak for awhile.
It took two years for Boeser to develop in college, three for Gaudette, two for Juolevi, one so far for Pettersson; it's just gonna take a few years imo. But hey, if Gaudette, Juolevi and Pettersson can step in right away and have Boeser like rookie seasons then perfect, I just don't think they will. |

Have you ever tried to trade the Sedins in Vancouver? Lord knows I have tried for years and years and have argued with an entire fan base for 9 years on that subject. Do you not think they could not have got a boatload for them? They are more revered than God in Vancouver. Don't go there my friend
 - VANTEL
Oh I know. I defended Benning early on, he didnt have much to wotk with, and I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. It has become painfully clear however that he misread the existing talent, and relied on a group of pro scouts who have no business working in this league, or have been the unluckiest group in the history of scouting. |

Hopefully! I think they need a GM who's better at other aspects of the position than just drafting. It seems as though Brackett is more in charge of that now though. |

What gives you the idea I'm impatient? Seriously? I want a slow rebuild. How is that not apparent to you? I want them to take a step back for another couple years and draft low, have you not been listening to me for the past couple years?
I want kids to develop for a few years, which means time in other leagues for a year or two. - LeftCoaster
I get the impression from the amount of name calling and complaining you do. Don't take it the wrong way we all do . You seem to be the most vocal and yes I see the irony because during the Sedin duration it was me. |

I agree with you. I was the same, willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at the beginning but his pro trading and UFA signings make me projectile vomit.
There was obviously a philosophical difference amongst management for years. Why that was allowed to fester is another black mark on management & ownership. |

No one arguing he made a lot of mistakes in the first two years . He is getting a little better now . He is no longer trying to hit the home run |

Not surprised . You eat Camels livers and Goats nuts 6 months of the year . Meatloaf would look like 5 star dining |

What am I complaining about? I'll tell you, that Benning hasn't committed to a rebuild, that he's not acquired more draft picks, that he's traded young players and good picks for project players or poop guys like Gudbranson. That's what I'm complaining about.
I want them to stop trying to take shortcuts to getting better. Which I'm lead to believe is what Linden wanted now that the Sedins are retired. Benning STILL thinks he can get them more competitive through the same means he's failed at since his first year.
Therein lies my issues with him. |

Should be like Hextall, two steps forward, two steps backwards. Don't get better but don't get worse at the same time. |

They don't need to step in and have Boeser like rookie seasons in order to make the team better in two seasons. I don't expect Gaudette to ever be more than a good 3rd line C in this league, but you need one of those to be a good team in this league. EP needs to show he can become a top line player in the NHL, and Juolevi at the minimum that he can be a top 3 Dman.
It's not expecting miracles out of EP to hope he scores 15 goals and 40 points as a rookie.

I'm not a Benning fan, never have been. I do think the team is getting close to turning it around though. It would be nice to win a lottery jackpot or 2 to get us close to contending in a few years. |

Two of those guys have played an NHL game
It took Horvat one extra year of junior and two years of NHL experience before he became a good NHL player, what makes you think every Canucks prospect can just step in and become an effective player like Boeser? Who developed for two years in college.
Three years away from being competitive imo. |

That's a reasonable expectation, although I do think they can achieve that in 2 if the chips fall the right way. |

What are you complaining about? I don't know calling Benning an idiot every day ?
Again I am the wrong person to be telling this . I led the way here back when Benning came in and said that he should trade Edler and the Sedins.I was shot down by almost every one of you . He could have made a killing in trades . So now 5 years later you want a rebuild that should have began in 2013. |

Different situations in that, like you mentioned, when Hextall took over from Holmgren he had a much younger core than Benning did.
He wouldn't however trade draft picks or young players for quick fixes, there's the biggest difference between them. He had some terrible ufa signings though, but those only cost money. |
