I'm still surprised that a team like MTL didn't take a flyer on Shipachyov (sp?).
Habs were bad when this was all going down... and they needed a Centre (still do!). |

I think Shipy torpedoed his own chances with how he handled the situation in Chicago. Had he gone down and been a good pro, almost any team needing depth down the middle might have been interested.
I don't think any team wants the distraction of a player coming into the room who refused to report to the AHL, the same league most of the guys in the room cut their teeth in. |

True... and our GM is always looking for "character" in the room over ability apparently. |

I like the signing. He gave up term to get more money. With legit nhl goalies short supply, see buff car edm etc, if he hit the open market he could have been enticed away even if his numbers dipped a little. Vegas isn’t killed by this extension. It’s a good carrot for the fans both hardcore and casual. It helps fans who watched Neal and Perron go feel better. About 1 mil to much per year and that’s acceptable with the rising cap |

He basically signed a No Trade/No Move with Vegas. Although technically the league didn't allow it, so the contract had to be modified, Vegas still had the ability to "honor" the agreement
Didn't he also have a girlfriend who was either pregnant, or had just had their baby? Also, neither spoke the language. It wasn't as easy as just packing up and heading to Chicago on a whim
They also screwed him when it was clear they had no plans for him. Weren't sincere about actually trading him, wouldn't mutually terminate the contract so he could sign as a FA with another team. Suspended him without pay so that he had to do a voluntary retirement so he could go back and play in Russia, which screws him if he ever wanted to give the NHL another go until he's 35
You'd think before they gave the guy 2 years and 9 million, they'd have had an idea about the guys strength and weaknesses before comitting
For all the credit McPhee got for GM of the year, he had an equal if not longer list of blunders
- The entire Shipachyov ordeal
- Drafting a bunch of pending UFA defenseman thinking he could flip them and then totally couldn't
- Tatar trade for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and then couldn't even get him on the roster
- More than a few dud expansion draft picks, Griffin Reinhart as an example

I still think there would have been a spot on the roster for Shipy. McPhee was trying to buy time to trade guys who weren't waiver exempt. Get picks and build.. This was before anyone in the hockey world realized how good this team was.
I think he would have been up after 10-20 games. Long enough for McPhee to realize nobody wanted Jason Garrison. It's a shame there was poor communication or it was lost in translation. |

I believe there was still interest from LA and Anaheim, both dealing with injury issues up the middle at the time, but Shipachyov was done with the NHL.

I just don't see a good reason for the timing. My guess is Fleury could've been signed in-season for same price if his play held up, for a little less if his play falters.
That little less matters, even with increased cap space. Pay Reaves a million too much, pay Fleury a million too much, that's a couple million that could go to legit NHL help or retaining a Perron or Neal type. |

Perron was leaving as soon as he was scratched in the playoffs. |

McPhee was never sincere about trading or allowing Shipy to play for another team
He blatantly twisted his arm into a voluntary retirement to clear the contract.
Usually I see guys 500k overpaid. 500k here, 500k there. Over an entire roster, added up there’s usually about 3 to 4 million in what I consider overpayments. That’s the difference between having an average player making 3 million and being able to upgrade him to a difference maker who makes 6.5

The biggest issue is who's behind him. No one right now ready to come close to replicating MAF's potential high-end. |

Subban in a couple of years could take over for the team and since Fluery signed before being 35 can retire if his game isn't up to snuff without having to worry about the cap. Legacy needs more work on his puck control so I do kind of like the signing with the extra year buffers. |
