Yup, they could.

Burke simply failed.

To the best of my knowledge you could not protect any picks until the NHL adopted the draft lottery in 2015. You slept in the bed that Burke made.
- polcat27

Not sure about that. I thought I read/heard that Burke talked about lottery protecting but it wasn’t that common to do so then. And they didn’t think they were a bottom 5 team so they just left it.

I think his ego played a part. Thought he had a better team. But it was the goalies that killed them. They were a decent team otherwise

so i'm starting to think carlsson may be out-pricing himself for toronto....might get up to 8-8.5m.

sign de haan for 4x4.

re-sign jvr 6mx7

trade gardiner

then one more trade for a rhd prospect - mckeown/roy/andersson etc.

grab an extra pick in a salary dump - orprik/p.martin/mason etc.

off season done

who has the best "attitude"....who cares about talent
- Symba007

The only reason the Habs poop the bed last year was a poor attitude.

It had nothing to do with the AHL-Quality roster.

You know what would have prevented that trade from being laughable?

If Burke had simply top 5 protected the pick he traded.

But he didn't.

So it will remain hilarious.

Forever.

- Scabeh

What is really hilarious is that the Kessel deal was not even remotely close to one of the worst deals of all time.

Long-term, the Leafs lost the deal, sure. But they won the deal easily for the first 5 years or so. The timing of the deal was poor, no question.

People forget how good Kessel is. You could make the argument that he was and is the best player in that deal. Conventional wisdom always suggests whoever got the best player won the deal... except when it is the Leafs apparently.

No on JvR, and De Haan is a left-handed D-man, we need RHD. Other than that, I agree we need to trade Gardiner.

Even if, and that's a big if, you consider Kessel a better player than Seguin or Hamilton.... the addition of the two doesn't make it close.

A first line winger for a #1 centre and a #1 defenseman.

That's how the trade turned out.

Definitely time to move on from JVR.

What we lose in offense, we will hopefully gain in intensity and 2-way responsibility.

they were a top 5 possession team...but 30th in team sv%
with average goalies they were probably a playoff team.

The fact that you can even debate that Kessel is the best player (he can't hear you from the Stanley cup rings in his ears), means it is not even in the conversation for the worst deals of all time.

Like I said, Leafs won many years of that deal. They lost long term but MANY deals have worked out that way.

It was ill advised to trade away the future when Burke did because the team was nowhere near contending. The deal itself was nowhere near horrible.

Not like Rask for Raycroft, or whatever Milbury traded Lol-own-goal for, or Gomez for McDonagh, or Hall for Larsson. It is not even in the conversation with those deals.

The ONLY reason it is brought up as being that level of bad is because it was the Leafs.

For what it's worth, and I'm speaking as someone coaching managers pretty much every day, going out of his way to go and talk with Matthews and exchange visions and thoughts is a very, very good thing.

Matthews will be fine. So will Babcock.

- Scabeh

It is.
He also did the same with Averagesen, Z and another player.
No controversy here...just stupid Toronto media.

Oh it is not the worst trade of all time. Far from it.

It's a bad trade, I'd argue a very bad one imo but there were worst turds out there.

Toronto got a player in the trade. A great one, put in a very bad situation.

For me, the worst of all time remains Patrick Roy.
