If they sign Vanek my guess is it's to play with Sedins. I would prefer them to be marginalized into a 3rd line role that could mentor a Rodin, BB, Goldy to become NHL players. A dignified fade out for retirement. A Vanek signing probably will boost their role or make others more competitive. If it turns into a TDL trade then it's a win. If not then Sedin extensions seem very much in store.

I'd also guess that after beating Nadal a couple of weeks ago in Montreal, even a No. 8 doesn't seem thaaaaat intimidating.
