Our D will be fine next year:
Gardiner/Zaitsev and Rielly/Hainsey as our 1A/B pairings, Rosen/Dermott and Carrick on the 3rd pairing will better than most expect.
Switch Zaitsev with Hainsey and I think you're right on both accounts and while not an ideal situation on paper its better than last season.
I'd be willing to bet Zaitsev comes into this season a few pounds heavier than last season. He's very competitive thats why Babs loves him, he played Ovechkin tough all season but big forwards overpowered him a bit last year. |

Reilly was indeed a good pick. But, I would put Forsberg, not Galchenyuk as a player to rival (or even surpass) Reilly as "Best of that Draft class".
Still, If Forsberg, Galchenyuk, Reilly are your Top 3....that was quite the "Dud" of a draft!!!
I would rank them:
1. Forsberg
2. Reilly
3. Galchenyuk |

This is a good idea for a column because Leaf mishaps is a bottomless source of material. |

And here is a shocker regarding 2011 Draft.
Nugent-Hopkins, always pegged as a disappointmtnt (and as a #1 maybe he is a little)....still, I wouldn't have guessed
Nugent-Hopkins 1st in Assists
and... 2nd in Points (behing Langeskog by just 14)
Ahead in points of such players as:
Kucherov
Gaudreau
Palat
Saad
Scheifele
and Huberdeau
I know he has been fairly healthy and played most of games to accomplish that....still....I was surprised, shocked even!!!

Nice. Always enjoy the annual review of past mistakes. We should never be allowed to forget them. We have to know our role in life.
Great job Mike |

Babcock already said in an interview a few days ago that Rielly and Hainsey will be playing together. I suspect Gardiner/Zaitsev to take on the tough(er) matchups, but will generally be balanced across our top 4.

Dang you, you average Leaf fan.. Go ahead and enjoy this current teams success, but, first, you need to be reminded of past experiences/failures.. Over and over again..
"Hey, can you believe we got Auston Matthews"
Oh yeah, how about when we drafted Steve Bancroft over Nik Lidstrom. |

RNH is a good player, obviously now overshadowed by two better offensive players, however, he's still a good second line center on most teams. A bad talent pool for a draft is hardly his fault as the number one pick.
As for his totals, perhaps look at the games played, he was put into the NHL before he should have been because of poor management and yet he still succeeded to a certain degree.
RNH - 395
Kucherov - 285
Gaudreau - 232
Palat - 307
Saad - 368
Scheifele - 306
Huberdeau - 303

Considering camp hasn't even started I'm sure a few pairing options will get a look. I'd wager money against Gardiner getting the tougher mathups over Reilly. |

Toronto traded 2011 first round pick (#30- Rickard Rakell), 2011 second round pick (#39- John Gibson) to Ducks for 2011 first round pick (#22-Tyler Biggs) on 2011-06-24

We had to add Kessel to the Biggs deal to get Kapanen and the 1st rd pick that turned into Frederik Andersen..
Biggs was a key piece in that deal. |

I think Rielly is back to taking the tough assignments again with Hainsey. Z was a little over his head IMO. But as you said I'm hoping year 2 he'll be better. |

Really? He had 52 points as a rookie. Hardly numbers that suggest he wasn't ready. |

This is the first in a series of columns. If I did this for the Canucks, I could write a novel. |
