I like his game. I think you can then run something like
Provorov - Phaneuf,
Hagg - Gudas,
Morin - Gostisbehere.
He can also play PK and match against some top lines. And like Gudas he can add some thump to guys coming across the middle.
I think Ottawa is in a spot they have to move him. If Sanheim shows he is ready in the future maybe you move Gudas who is younger and has a reasonable deal.
I know Phaneuf has a bad rep about him, but I actually think he could work for the Flyers. - J35Bacher
If you have half decent scouting, you should be able to find a better player than Phaneuf for less money and term.

I'll be sure to notify the coaching staff - PhillySportsGuy
I'd expect things to change through the season. I'm not sold on Ghost-Morin doing more than 3rd pair minutes with Ghost getting PP1 time to start the year.
I guess I'll be getting a ELC offer for team negative soon.
I get the feeling there will be a lot of rotating on the defense next year. I'm just excited to finally see a lot of the young players funneling through. Seems like we've been waiting forever on some of these guys. - PhillySportsGuy
Why?
Ottawa already asked him to waive his NMC and were turned down. I guess you don't think that Phaneuf is a better player than AMac? He had 9 goals, 30 points and skated 23 minutes a night for a playoff team, he sure seems like the better player. - BiggE
no i just meant that you forgot he wasnt in Toronto...i enjoyed it

The post he quoted has Phaneuf in Toronto still...before your edit I guess.
And there's nothing wrong with a wee nip before noon!
That's the dream but how likely is it that all 6 of our dmen are home grown and from the last 4(5?) drafts? How often does that happen? As much as I would love for this to happen its almost a garuntee one or two of our prospects dont pan out and become more like Luke Schenn than PK Subban

I don't know.
Phaneuf is a pretty solid player who can give you 27-30 minutes a night on the top pair.
Ottawa is in a bit of a bind with him not waiving his NMC because now they need to protect Karlsson, Phaneuf and one of Methot/Cici. I see Phaneuf moved before Saturday. If you can get ottawa to take Read and retain 40-50% that's a solid deal.
Keeping MacDonald is fine for now. His buyout isn't too bad if they want to go that route next year or the year after. I just wish they'd play him on the third pair. Gudas is far more equipped to handle top pair duties with Provorov. - PhillySportsGuy
No reason not to keep him. I mean if Vegas wants to take him great. He should be thought of as the #7 going into training camp. If he's pushed down even further great he can be on the phantoms. It would actually be good for him to be the callup all year for injuries or if a young guy isn't working out because you can waive him up and down without ever having to worry if he'll get claimed. He's the perfect #7 utility guy for us

It may not be likely, but Provorov and Ghost are already established NHL regulars and there is not a scout that I've ever heard from who doesn't think, 100%, that Sanheim, Morin, Myers and Hagg will be NHL players. Can't say for sure that they are all top 4 guys or if any, save Provorov, will be top pairing guys. But I will be very surprised if, barring injury, all 6 aren't NHL regulars.

want no part of it. Gudas is our Phaneuf. Young players coming

I think you meant 20-23 minutes.
But I wouldn't consider taking Phaneuf at 4 x $7m unless MacDonald (3 x $5m) was going the other way.
