It was a trade that really only worked for teams like washington and st. louis, to be honest. Both teams had reached a bit of a plateau and were looking to add something they thought they were missing - YuenglingJagr

We just beat one of the best teams in the league, and our top/second most hated rival 4-0, and yet you still find a way to female dog and complain about the coaching within the first 2 pages of the thread.
Sadly, I'm not surprised. - jmatchett383
Gotta admire the dedication to his craft, though. |

I think they signed Neuvirth because they only wanted to commit so much to the goalie position. I think they have a feeling Sandstrom is coming over and you can't have 3 younger goalies battling for time in the AHL.
Now you can have one in the NHL(Stolarz/Lyon). And the other two battle in the AHL. - J35Bacher
You can't have a tandem of Nuevirth and one of the young kids as the goaltenders next year.
Nuevirth is injury prone, and hasn't shown the ability to stay healthy or be a # 1 goaltender, and the kids are unproven commodities right now. |

I really think that Neuvirth will be their pick. He's the best option among the group of Read's, Cousins, Raffls, etc. - Just5
I don't think so.
There will be plenty of other better goalies. I think Read makes sense. Possibly Weise.
Both guys can play up and down the lineup. Read can play PP, PK and anywhere even strength. I know as Flyers fan there are certain feelings for players but I think Read actually makes sense for Vegas. |

I would imagine he preferred the NMC stay in place. It didn't sound like Hextall even worried about it and saw him as one of his protections, so I am not sure if it was "necessary". Either way, semantics
I do think Vegas would take Filppula if he was exposed. He is a good player, he just was a hindrance to what Tampa needed to do this offseason. - YuenglingJagr
I have a feeling we're losing Raffl |

Why not?
If Hextall feels one of the young goalies is ready then what's the worry?

Because when Nuevirth goes down with his typical 4-6 week injury then what?
Have two kids share the goaltending duties? Trade an asset away for a retread? |

And this would suck not because Raffl is incredible but because we lose another natural LW, while not upgradibig in that area in five years. Gagne, JvR, Hartnell and Raffl. Gone without really replacing any of them. |

Mock drafts I've seen include names like Bernier and Hammond, etc. They need 3 goalies and Neuvirth is in the converstation, plus he was drafted by their GM.
Guys like Read are readily available to them in UFA. If Raffl is exposed that's a possibility, but Neuvirth is the better contract |

Yes.
What did Matt Murray do to show he was ready to be called up to the Pens? He played well in the AHL. Same thing Lyons and Stolarz have done.
You that scared of a young goalie playing? |

Varlymov will be available too and he was a McPhee pick.
Guys like Read might be availbe in FA but they would have a say to sign or not. Pick Read and he doesn't have a choice and you know the term and money committed. |

Too much. too late.
13-0 only hope.
Only to be dashed by NJ since we are the perfect slumpbusters.
Love watching them look like world beaters against top teams then laying an egg against cellar dwellers.
Keep in mind we played a vey tired and worn out version of the Pens... - BadCowboyDan

The Penguins had insurance in the NHL all of last season. The Pens already got invited to the dance before their NHL goalies got hurt, enter Murray. |

1) Have you ever been to the top of the arch?
2) Who is on the cover of NHL 2000?
3) Did you feel that a "veteran" with playoff experience, who played for a rival, might help you finally beat said rival in the playoffs?
4) Who is your favorite saxophonist? |

Vegas may be an attractive option for guys on Read's level in ufa. They have a good chance of seeing a lot of ice and pp time.

So I was thinking about the Streit/Filppula trade late last night, which I admitted that I did not hate but would have preferred to major salary in return. I like Filppula but from a Vegas draft point of view, the deal does bother me a little. I don't think Vegas will take Filppula, nor do I think he'll be someone we protect. - SuperSchennBros
He has a NMC so he has to be protected. Get ready to cry a river when one of Read/Weise, Raffl, Bellemare, Cousins or Laughton get taken by Vegas. |

I think they signed Nuevy with the understanding that McPhee will take him in the ED. I believe I heard that mentioned somewhere and it makes sense. - WhirlingDervish
They didn't need to sign him to do that, but it does fill a requirement |

I don't think Neuvirth is as attractive as what people think.
Guys that could be available:
Fleury
Grubauer
Hutchinson
Raanta
Varlymov
Subban
I just don't think he's that attractive. I think Read would be a more attractive piece from the Flyers. |

That's fine.
I just think the Flyers only wanted to commit so much money to someone who might be splitting a lot of games or possibly be a back up to the younger goalie.
Maybe they didn't feel Mason would cut his pay in half to fill that role. I don't know. Hextall made his call and signed Neuvirth. |
